Click to view full image... WWI Military Cross engraved George Herbert Whyte Before Jerusalem Decr 8th 1917, 1914 Star to G.H. Whyte Haden Guest Unit, BWM and Victory Medal to Lieut G.H. Whyte nearly extremely fine, court mounted for display. George Herbert Whyte's MC was announced in the London Gazette dated 24th August 1918 while serving with 2/18th Bn (London Irish Rifles) London Regt "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. Whilst acting as company commander, the capture of the first objective, in the face of heavy machine-gun fire, was chiefly due to his determination and skilful leadership. Quickly grasping the situation, he at once pushed on to the second objective, the capture of which was also largely due to his initiative and dash. He exhibited soldierly qualities of a high order, and set a splendid example to his men." He was killed in action on 23rd December 1917 and is buried in Jerusalem War Cemetery. Only 62 1914 stars issued to the Haden Guest Unit which was a medical unit named after Leslie Haden Guest and which set up in the Hotel Majestic in Paris in September 1914, so an extremely rare unit named on the medal. Whyte is listed as an Orderly on the MIC for the star. With copied CWGC, Soldiers Died, MIC and internet research, he landed in France 5/9/14, commissioned in 18th London Regt 9/8/15, was the co-founder with his wife of the International Order of the Round Table. Click to view full image... WWI brothers group with 1. Military Cross reverse engraved to Lt E.W. Rowlands 5th D.L.I. 23rd Feb 1918 extremely fine in case of issue. Evan William Rowlands MC was announced in the London Gazette dated 25th April 1918 "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in command of a working party carrying trench boards near the front line. When an enemy aeroplane dropped bombs on a second party of the battalion, half of whom became casualties, though heavy shelling commenced, he at once hastened to the party and saw that all the wounded were carried to the dressing station. He then rallied his party and made a second journey to the line with the material of the second party. The successful completion of the work was entirely due to him." Sold with original telegrams to family stating he was wounded 26 Oct 1917 and another transferred to 2nd Western General Hospital 14 Nov 1917, a silver ID bracelet engraved E.W. Rowlands 5th D.L.I., 9 photos (most in groups), 5th DLI Mess Bill, paper cuttings, silver topped cane, Soldiers Bible, 1918 Soldiers Own diary with entries for most days, very useful information. In later life he was the vicar of Foxton near Cambridge until 1955, he died in Bradford in 1956. With copied MIC and LG, he landed in France 12/5/17. <\n>2. Plenderlieth R. War R. (C.S.Mjr 14/R. War R. on DCM, L.Sjt on star, Jubilee & Coronation un-named as issued) nearly very fine to extremely fine. Carl B Plenderlieth's DCM was announced in the London Gazettes dated 1st January and 17th April 1918, "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during a long period. He has acted as platoon commander on several occasions in active operations, and he has invariably displayed great courage, energy and ability." With copied MIC, LG, casualty lists, he landed in France 21/11/15, received a GSW to the head in October 1917, and in Terry Carter's book on the Birmingham Pals, is recorded as playing full back for the Aston Old Edwardians Rugby Club for 2 seasons, entitlement to Jubilee and Coronation not confirmed. 14th Bn were the 1st Birmingham Pals. William Worton's MM was announced in the London Gazette dated 2nd November 1917. With typed extract from War Diary and National Roll of Great War, MM for his part in a trench raid east of Witchete 27/8/17. The raid was carried out on Bee Farm by a force of 130 men, and 3 prisoners were captured from 139th (Saxon) Regt. The Bn received 2 MCs, 2 DCMs and 4 MMs for the raid. He was mobilised from the Reserve in August 1914, landed France 8/4/15, he was wounded twice and after the last which occurred in the retreat of 1918, he was invalided home, resided at Sparkbrook.
