A unique name, he died at sea with the 3rd/1st East Anglian Field Ambulance RAMC (Cpl 2158) on 13th August 1915 when HMT Royal Edward was sunk by a torpedo fired by UB14 and with no known grave is commemorated on the Helles Memorial. The Royal Edward was carrying 1366 troops, mostly reinforcements for the 29th Division in Gallipoli when she was sunk approaching Mudros, with the loss of 803 troops and 132 crew and was one of the worst loss of life at sea in WWI.
