  Boer War officer's private purchase campaign equipment attributed to 2nd Lieut (later Lt Col) Sir Charles Bingham Lowther 4th Baronet of Swillington, 8th Hussars. With wooden map holder (Patent No 1482) with compass fitted at the top, leather strap to reverse, engraved on back of holder and strap C.B. Lowther, leather 3 compartment pouch 28cm x 21cm (unmarked), leather carrying case with 2 oval shape glass flasks (crack to 1 glass) (unmarked) and leather folding map case marked G.L. (should be C.L.) containing April 1900 Ermelo fabric map marked C.B. Lowther 8th Hussars, 1900 paper maps for Ermelo Carolina No 7, Lydenburg No 10 and Belfast, Machadorp, Duilstroom No 6, paper maps are fragile with range of tears along the folds. Although map case is marked G.L., this is thought to be a mistake, no officers listed for this period with initials G.B. Lowther. Charles Bingham Lowther served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Boer War with 8th Hussars and was issued a 5 clasp QSA with roll marked invalided. He also served in WWI with Northamptonshire Yeomanry and was awarded the DSO in 1917, Croix de Guerre, MID in 1915, 1917 and 1919 and appointed CB in 1948. (½B) £130

  A Rifle Brigade private soldier's journal covering his travels from August 1880 to January 1881. The journal covers 17 large neatly written pages with the rest of the book filled with someone elses paper cuttings, prose and poetry etc. The journal starts on 21st August with 1st Bn Rifle Brigade parading for deployment to India. They sailed from Portsmouth on the Troopship Jumna and the journal covers the journey out to India, the various stops along the way, a burial at sea, conditions on board, disembarkation, rail trip to Poona, the barracks, marches around India etc. An interesting read about general soldiering and conditions in 1880 and scarce to find an account written by a private soldier. Also with complete transcript and 2 cabinet photos of Pte Rowlands. (1/2B) £100

Hollowed bone box with Nelson 3/4 length portrait in uniform on one side and HMS Victory in full sail on the other, with loose fitting lid with naval cannon, length 8cm. 2. Round pill box with lid, 1805 Trafalgar carved to front, cannon barrel either side, hull of Victory to reverse, rope and compass decoration on lid, 5cm tall. 3.
