SUFFOLK - CLARE - VERY EARLY NAMESTAMP ON COVER FROM "PENTELOW IN ESEXS" TO LONDON; 12 May 1725 EL (scruffy file notes on flap and foot of address panel, folded under and so hardly detract) to London (charged "3" obscured by filing notes) from "Mary Coock" in "Pentelow in Esexs" [sic] but posted across the border in nearby Clare with a very fine small "CLARE" (SFK195; only two known - this the earliest) nicely placed on the top flap. Ref the need for repairs to a farm, and one of the earliest Suffolk marks. [Mentioned in the introduction to the Suffolk section of the Willcocks County catalogue as being "the solitary example" recorded, but Slemons - who illustrates this very example - notes a 1734 usage too.] Cross Reference: ESSEX £150

PERTHSHIRE - EARLY LETTERS - INGOING MAIL (ONE EX FRANCE) PRIOR TO OPENING OF PERTH P.O.; Fine 25 Dec. 1661 EL (small part one flap lost) from "Tarvet" (near Cupar, Fifie) to "George Oliphant at Perth these [be de delivered]" sent by private means; a Very early internal Scottish letter. Plus 27 July 1674 EL (some creasing and a couple of small stains; unsealed) sent from "Paris" to the same George Oliphant "of Claishbenie" but with detailed address inc. "To be left at Robert Duncan's chope [shop] at Edr in the land mercat. And to be sent from thence to Thomas Heltie, merchand in Perth, Scotland"; long contents ref. the serious illness of a fellow Scot in Paris ("...a scrophulous tumor...") and noting that "...Coll. Scot Andrews, his second sone, was killed heir in the horse mercat by 8 French men...The King seems greatlie offended..." and has ordered arrests inc. "the Duke of Orleans, master of the horse". PERTHSHIRE - EARLY MAIL TO & FROM THE LOW COUNTRIES - BEFORE & AFTER OPENING OF PERTH P.O.; 18 Sept. 1681 EL (minor edge wear) to Rotterdam endorsed "Pd to Lond. 5d" on the front, written from "Perth" ref. a ship sent from Kirkcaldy etc. Charged "XI" in red crayon on arrival with fine "SE/28" London transit Bishop Mark on the flap. Perth P.O. was not opened until 1689, so this letter must have been sent by private carrier to be posted in Edinburgh. Rare early letter from rural Scotland to an overseas destination. [Ex David Cornelius; Cavendish Nov. 2005, lot 1521; realised £276.] Plus 24 Mar. c.1695 E (toned with worn folds etc.) probably from the Low Countries addressed "to the care of the poft in Perth" charged "8" and "1/1" (latter on flap) which suggests a Low Countries origin, having a fair London "MA/31" transit Bishop Mark on the flap. PERTHSHIRE - THE EARLIEST KNOWN POSTAL MARKING OF PERTH - UNIQUE MANUSCRIPT "Perth/4" WITH NAME IN FULL; Attractive 25 Jan. 1725 EL [not July as recorded in Clark, where illust. on p.111] from "Slogenhole(?)" to Edinburgh charged "4" (double rate) on the front, and also having the manuscript "Perth/4" nicely placed on the side-flap. PERTHSHIRE - THE VERY RARE "PERTH/LAMB" HANDSTRUCK MARK - REMARKABLY FINE STRIKE ON 2d-RATE COVER; Fine 6 Feb. 1751 EL from "Perth" to Edinburgh charged "2[d]" (single rate) with a very fine (especially for this) "[framed Lamb]/PERTH" nicely placed on the lower flap. A remarkably clear strike of this most unusual and highly desirable prestamp mark which has only been recorded for less than 15 months in 1750/51. [As noted in Auckland/Stables, p.144; "...most examples being poor, incomplete or badly blurred".] Exhibition Quality.
