Dec. 1885 embossed 9 pies to Karachi, cancelled "FIELD P.O./1 DEC 85" and signed by Capt. Orr. On the reverse are a Sea Post Office c.d,s. and "SECOND DELy./KARACHI" c.d.s (19 Dec. 85); 20 Jun. 1886 env. embossed 9 pies surcharged 1 anna sent to Pay Havildar Golab Singh, A Coy. 21st Punjab Infantry, Sialkot, Punjab, from a member of the same regiment attached to the Field Force at Fort Tokar. Env. is cancelled by "No.1/FIELD P.O" barred "B"duplex dated 1 Jul. 1896. Bombay & Sialkot c.d.s. on reverse. Also 1886 env. embossed 9 pies surcharged 1 anna from a Field Pay Officer (countersigned Captain, Field Paymaster, Suakin Force) to Poona. Env is cancelled with "BASE OFFICE/B" c.d.s. dated 4 Jul. 1896. On reverse are Aden transit & Poona arrival marks. An Indian garrison occupied Suakin from June to Dec. 1896, to release Egyptian & Sudanese forces for the Dongola campaign. Unusual & scarce trio. Fine examples. EX THE U.K. TO UGANDA INTENDED TO BE CARRIED ON THE ILL-FATED THIRD EXPERIMENTAL EAST AFRICA SERVICE SOUTHWARD FLIGHT OF MARCH 1927: Env. ex Oxted (Surrey) bearing KGV ½d, 1d & 6d adhesives plus black/blue airmail label addressed to Kampala. Backstamped Kisumu (31 March) & Kampala (4 April) alongside red "KENYA-SUDAN/MR 31/27/AIRMAIL" cachet. The env. was intended for the Fairey III service to Jinja which was suspended due to a crash into Lake Victoria on the Northbound leg (12 March) & subsequently was carried by rail. It is not clear why the env. was given the Kenya-Sudan Air Mail flight cachet. Click to view full image...Click to view full image... TRISTAN DA CUNHA - TYPE I CACHET ON COVER TO SURREY: (1916) env. (tear in backflap, otherwise fine) to Mrs Gertrude Anderson at Woldingham, Surrey, bearing faint but legible strike of the Type I cachet. [There are no other markings but was from Agnes Glass, and can be dated to 26 November 1916, when Agnes wrote a letter to Mrs Anderson thanking her for a parcel she had sent to the island, and giving further personal details about herself and the island. Gertrude Anderson published this letter in 'The Times' on 1 January 1918 (copy enclosed with lot). The cover was carried on the Norwegian ship 'Trio' which called at Tristan on 11 December 1917.] There is also a letter written by Gertrude Anderson to J. Faulkner, apparently in response to 'The Times' letter, relating to a philatelic enquiry about Tristan '...Tristan da Cunha has no stamps of its own...The envelope is however postmarked...I believe some philatelists also collect envelopes...'. A rare example of the Type I cachet and a fascinating letter wholly on the subject of Philately. SG C1 £4000. (2 items) £1,500

TRISTAN DA CUNHA - PAIR OF TYPE III CACHET COVERS: c1921-22 pair of envs one to 'The Foreign Editor' at 'The Daily Mail' in London, bearing two somewhat overinked strikes of the Type III cachet in grey-black. Very fine and scarce commercial usage. The other to Victor Marsh in Paris with France 10c tied by superb strike of Type III cachet. Some tone spots, otherwise very fine albeit philatelic usage. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA - RARE 1847 5c COVER TO HOLLAND VIA BOSTON, LONDON & OSTEND EX PHILADELPHIA WITH BLUE GRID CANCEL; Fine 16 Sept. 1850 EL (ref. an order for nutmeg) from "Philadelphia" to Amsterdam (from the well known Alstorphius & Von Hemert correspondence) endorsed to go by "Cunard Steamer from Boston to Lpool" with 1847 5c Orange-Brown (4 close to huge margins, but outer frame-line just touched at bottom centre) just tied by a rather unclear blue Philadelphia circular grid matching the fine "PHILADA PA./5 cts" cds alongside, charged "1/8" (British transit) and then "130" (Dutch arrival charge) with London (30 Sept.) and Amsterdam (2 Oct., with fair red oval "ENGELAND/OVER OSTENDE" alongside) backstamps. Listed in the Alexander census; one of only 23 1st-Issue 5c covers recorded to Holland. Exhibition Quality. COVER TO G.B.; 15 April 1854 EL from "San Francisco" to London having a very fine rare Liverpool Handstruck "1/2½" on the front matching the very fine rare Liverpool oval "AMERICA" d.s. (20 May) on the flap, but also having a very fine rare Liverpool "ART-5/BR. PKT" mark (across the join; just clear of a small closed seal-tear and very slightly overstruck by a red London cds) also on the reverse. This ART-5/BR. PKT. mark (used for US West Coast mails and for some West Indies mails only) is seldom seen. This is the first cover with both the rare oval America d.s. and an ART mark that we can recall having seen. Exhibition Quality. Baltic" with 1851 Strip of Four of the Imperf. 12c Black (tight but clear margins all round except outer frame-line just shaved at foot of two left-hand stamps; not tied but clearly belongs) cancelled by light red NY grid cancels matching the "6/NEW YORK" cds alongside with London arrival cds (24 Apr.), or with a fine 4m Pair of the same 10c tied by the red NY grids matching a mainly fine "3/NEW YORK" cds alongside overlapped by London 31 July cds.
