Click to view full image...Click to view full image... IMPORTANT LINE ENGRAVED COVERS - THE UNIQUE CIRCULAR "QV WHITING EMBOSSED CAMEO" POSTCARD WITH 1d BLACK POSTED FROM TOTNES; 23 Nov. 1840 circular Embossed Charles Whiting green & red Queen Victoria Cameo (some minor dusting and understandable slight scuffing to the raised parts) used with Plate 3 1d Black (CD; close to huge margins on 3 sides, shaved along left and with small corner fault at top right where overlapping the edge of the card) tied by a light orange-red Totnes Maltese Cross with mainly very fine "TOTNESS" cds alongside, addressed to "Mifs Jane Cole, 2, Orchard Terrace, Torquay". [Our research has shown that the addressee was born in Devon in 1821, was of independent means in 1841, and was probably not - as one might have assumed - related to Sir Henry Cole, Rowland Hill's assistant during the Treasury Competition.] Only a handful of examples of this spectacular Charles Whiting Embossed QV Cameo have been recorded; one in red a gold background (Royal Collection), a similar blue/gold example (NPM) and two in this circular format (both in green & red - this example, plus another ex Marcus Samuel). This is the only recorded postally used Whiting Embossed Cameo, one of only 4 known with the head of QV, and the second earliest recorded Picture Postcard in the World. [The only other recorded postcard with a 1d Black - a coloured cartoon - sold in a London Stamp Exchange auction in March 2002 for £31,750.] [Provenance of this Cameo with the 1d Black: Sothebys Postage Stamp auction, 4 Sept. 1981, lot 143.] Cross Reference: POSTAL REFORMS, PICTURE POSTCARDS, DEVONFALSE £5,000
