A fine Victorian antique sterling silver and ivory fitted Coromandel travelling case, London 1874 by George Betjemann & Sons The rectangular Coromandel case with brass strung edges, opening with Betjemann patent mechanism to reveal a fully fitted interior comprising an assortment of needlework and grooming items with spiral turned mother of pearl handles all in fitted blue velvet trays. The central compartment containing ivory brushes, mirrors, a button hook and glove stretchers, all incised with the motto, crest and coat of arms for the Muir family. The silver topped jars and scent bottles with engraved decoration of foliate scrolls and floral forms, each engraved to the centre with same motto, crest and coat of arms, the fitted sections decorated with cut steel tracery surrounds. The flanking sections with button release concealed drawers, the lid with button release mirror to reveal document section. Dimension of case closed-35 cm x 27 cm x 21.5 cm / 13.75 inches x 10.6 inches x 8.5 inches £3000-4000 Provenance - a gift of Mrs Clara Gardiner Muir (d.1952) of Postlip Hall, Cheltenham, thence by descent. An early 19th century English gilt brass and pique tortoiseshell spyglass monocular, circa 1810 Six-draw with the base in grenetis pique inlaid tortoiseshell, signed 'Dollond, London' to eyepiece. Length-9 cm / 3.5 inches λ £200-300 Dollond and Company, optical and scientific instrument makers, started in 1750 by Peter Dollond in Hatton Garden, London. In 1758 Dollond obtained a patent on a compound lens for refracting telescopes which was free of both chromatic and spherical aberration. He communicated his results to the Royal Society. The lenses were described as achromatic. 1761 John Dollond was appointed optician to George III and the Duke of York. In 1766 Peter went into partnership with his younger brother, John. They went onto supply optical instruments for Captain Cook and for Hadley. In 1820 Dollond were made opticians to George IV. |
