Kent Interest-A Victorian antique sterling silver snuff box, Birmingham 1837 by Francis Clark Of rectangular form with rounded corners, the lid with flush hinge bordered with raised foliate scroll rim and a foliate scroll thumbpiece. Decorated with basket-weave engine turning to base and lid and reeded sides. The lid engraved "HG Vinten, Ramsgate" in a rectangular cartouche. Gilt interior, marked to base and lid interior. Length-8.2 cm / 3.2 inches Weight-105 grams / 3.3 ozt £200-300 The auctioneering partnership of Friend & Vinten was established in 1838 in Ramsgate by George Friend and Issac Vinten. The company continued under Isaac's son, Henry George Vinten (1843-1909) who had been made a partner in the firm in 1869. Henry lived at Elmside (9 North Avenue). He was a prominent member of the Kent Archaeological Society and contributed to a number of papers. In 1866, he married Emily Lucy Kelsey (1841- 1926), daughter of Charles Vye Kelsey. When Henry suffered a fatal heart attack at Elmside on Friday 7th May 1909, and was buried in Ramsgate Cemetery, he left £38,300 7s. 4d. The wealth that had resulted from continually adapting to changing circumstances and effectively creating a new profession, typified the aspirations of the age.
