Also 1698 (5 Jan.) wrapper to "Wm. Guidott Esq., member of Parliament in Lincolns Inn Field" with rate mark and the large Bishop mark on the reverse; light soiling. (2 covers) £120-150

Edward Clarke (died 1723) was a Whig Alderman and a worsted weaver, Clarke was elected mayor in 1700 and MP for Norwich in 1701 but defeated in the August 1702 and in the November 1703 elections

Charles Pelham Villiers (1802-1898) was a British lawyer and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1835 to 1898, making him the longest-serving Member of Parliament. Pelham Villiers also holds the distinction of the oldest candidate to win a parliamentary seat, at the age of 93

Edward Baines (1774-1848) was an English newspaper proprietor, politician, and author of historical and geographic works of reference. In 1834 he was elected as member for Leeds. He was re-elected in 1835 and 1837, but resigned in 1841

George Horatio Cholmondeley, 2nd Marquess of Cholmondeley; 1792-1870, styled Viscount Malpas from 1792 to 1815 and subsequently Earl of Rocksavage until 1827. He was a British peer and Lord Great Chamberlain of England between 1830 and 1838. Before being called to the House of Lords, he was a Tory Member of Parliament from 1817 to 1821

Click to view full image... x 1840 (6 Apr.) 1d. envelope printed in vermilion on cream wove paper (122x83mm) with "(Temporary)" at top, addressed to a member of his family at their estate, Wimpole, Arrington (Cambridgeshire) and signed "Hardwicke"; bearing a fair strike of crowned Paid in red. The reverse with red wax seal bearing the lord's crest. There is a brown stain in the centre of the address caused by the wax seal, otherwise exceptionally fresh and fine. Similar to setting 2C but with subtle variations in the positions of the type. Twenty one covers recorded on cream paper. S.G. PE6, £25,000. Photo £5,000-6,000
Admiral Charles Philip Yorke, 4th Earl of Hardwicke (1799-1873). Hardwicke represented Reigate in the House of Commons between 1831 and 1832 and Cambridgeshire between 1832 and 1834. In 1834, on the death of his uncle, he became the fourth Earl of Hardwicke, and inherited the substantial Wimpole estate in Cambridgeshire. He was a member of Lord Derby's cabinet in 1852 as Postmaster General and as Lord Privy Seal between 1858 and 1859. In 1852 he was sworn of the Privy Council

Robert Hyde Greg (1795-1875). He was a founder of the Mechanics' Institute. He was an active member of the Liberal Party and the Anti-Corn Law League. Though he was elected to Parliament for Manchester in 1839, it was without his consent and he resigned in the following year. He was an opponent of factory reform, trades unions and worker health and safety legislation

March 14th", fine strikes of handstruck "2" and small letters "H:P" in red (Willcocks & Jay 560), the flap bearing oval datestamp in red. The letter is from a lieutenant in the King's Hussars and sent from "Tallagh" on 10th March. A fine and appealing example of this scarce handstamp. Photo £400-500

A horizontal folding crease and signed "F.L. Austen Esq." at foot. Rare use of this handstamp after the London Twopenny Post period, for which these handstamps were designed. Willcocks & Jay 560a. Click to view full image... x 1848 (Mar.) entire to Corfu, Ionian Islands "Via Trieste" marked "pd 1/3" which has been corrected, indistinct London despatch c.d.s., large "P D" in oval and Boulogne S. Mer transit (18.3), the reverse bears a very good strike of the rare "house of commons" circular postmark in red. An exceptional and rare postmark which is thought to only have been used on letters posted within the House of Commons which were addressed to overseas destinations. It is believed that there are only two examples recorded. Photo £1,500-2,000

A good example of this very scarce cancellation. Photo £150-200
It is thought that this cancellation was employed at the Houses of Parliament post office for about two months

Click to view full image... x 1859 (5 Aug.) stampless entire letter to Baltimore, "Per Steamer from Liverpool, 6 Aug" bearing a good strike of "houses of parliament/s.w." c.d.s. code "2" with "19/cents" accountancy handstamp in black and "n.york br. pkt./24" c.d.s. (18.8), charged 24c., and with a further Houses of Parliament c.d.s. on the reverse. The letter sent by William Scholefield on his late father's business. A very desirable cover which is believed to be the only example of this c.d.s. on overseas mail from the Houses of Parliament. Photo £350-400
William Scholefield (1809-1867) was a British businessman and Liberal politician. He was a leading figure in the politics of the rapidly growing industrial town of Birmingham in the mid-nineteenth century. In July 1844 Joshua Scholefield died (William's father), causing a vacancy in the parliamentary representation of the borough. William contested the resulting by-election, but was defeated by the Conservative candidate Richard Spooner. Three years later a general election was called, and Scholefield was returned along with the sitting Radical MP, George Frederick Muntz. He retained the seat until his death

House of Commons, and redirected on arrival to Hanover Square and bears a neat strike of the diminutive "R" in crowned circle (denoting no fee for redirection). Horizontal crease along the top of the envelope which runs through the adhesive, A scarce instructional mark. Photo £80-100
Thomas O'Hagan, 1st Baron O'Hagan (1812-1885). He was returned to Parliament as Liberal Member for Tralee in 1863. In 1865 he was appointed a judge of common pleas, and in 1868 became Lord Chancellor of Ireland in William Gladstone's first administration
