Train '(Going West)', 11th - 14th September 1919, to his mistress Freda Dudley Ward ('Fredie darling precious beloved one'). The Prince writes a lengthy social letter to his lover, in bold pencil, over several days whilst travelling, informing her that he has been playing golf in Winnipeg which was followed by 'a terrible lunch given by the Canadian Club at the Alexandra Hotel where I had to fire off the Winnipeg speech & that was some strain addressing 700 men on a glass of iced water!! Still even the staff were pleased & say it more than wiped out my rotten speech at the City lunch on Tues which they didn't approve of' and continuing 'I stood from 3.15 to 4.45 on a platform in front of Govt. Ho. while 6000 people filed past, a new form of popular reception as opposed to shaking hands with only 2000 & I have doctor's orders not to shake with my right hand!! Winnipeg has been fairly strenuous tho. it was amazing to get such wonderful welcomes in a city where only 3 months ago there had been shooting in the streets, in fact a real battle to prevent a Boschwiki soviet being formed & I was threatened with petitions tho. Nothing happened thank God!! Still one had to be on the watch & that was an extra strain tho. I've received some very satisfactory police reports!!' The Prince further writes in a more romantic vein, 'Fredie darling tho. guess if I dream I'll dream of YOU bless YOU my precious little goddess!! Perhaps you won't approve of this last title sweetheart but a man must have some religion & goddess to worship & you know my religion is worship of the goddess Fredie. I suppose I am writing balls as usual but then I generally do that angel don't I? Tho. you know all my balls are meant!!....I get more & more lonely every day Fredie darling & am getting so so stale not tired just stale from the strain & monotony of being P. of W. & doing stunts all day & everyday & I do want my precious beloved little madonna oh! so desperately!!' Continuing the next day, from Edmonton, the Prince writes of witnessing a stampede at a race course, 'I wonder if you've ever seen a "stampede" sweetheart which is a series of exhibition cowboy stunts riding bucking horses lassooing (sic) cattle etc etc & they had...fine performers there, fine tough men who as hard as nails who almost put one to shame & make one feel soft!!' and also comments on his duties, 'They are wearing me out these bl—d- speeches angel & I've exhausted all my hot air & its a case of repetition the whole time now which I hate & which is flat tho. it can't be helped & after all its a new place each time!!'. The Prince further writes from Governmnent Hose, Edmonton, on 13th September, informing his correspondent about a 'huge pompous party' he has attended and telling her that he has met some mutual acquaintances including a lady named Cameron, 'I find her revolting to look at & I know you don't like her much darling!!' and concludes by requesting some photographs of Dudley Ward, 'I go to bed loving HER worshipping HER more than ever'. The final part of the Prince's letter is written from the train travelling to Calgary on 14th September, 'I'm a vewy depwessed & despondent little boy to-night Fredie darling & want YOU & your divine sweet comforting baisers as I've never wanted them before; all this official work & speeches are beginning to break my heart angel', further expressing his frustrations at having to attend church on a Sunday, 'of course your poor little boy is being dragged off to church on arrival which makes him very peevish!! What I think of having to go to church & I told you that won't let me play golf on Sundays being here officially which maddens me produces my foulest language whenever I'm reminded of it & it is a d-d shame too!!' and concluding his letter 'Oh! why isn't my precious darling blessed little madonna not going to be at Banff too as I do want HER & just one baiser to give me a new life & comfort & I've never felt so lonely before!! This separation isn't fair on your poor devoted adoring little David who loves YOU love YOU darling darling sweetheart as no man has ever loved!! I'm nearly crying!! All my love & paper baisers & every thing & kiss the babies from me pleath darling!!' EDWARD VIII: (1894-1972) King of the United Kingdom January - December 1936. Later Duke of Windsor. A long A.L.S., with his initial D, (and further signed David and three more times with his initial D at various stages throughout the letter), twenty pages, 4to, Panama (and at sea travelling to San Diego), 1st - 6th April 1920, to his mistress Freda Dudley Ward ('Fredie darling darling beloved one'), on the printed stationery of H.M.S. Renown. The Prince writes on a daily basis to his correspondent whilst at sea, informing her of various events and duties, referring to mutual acquaintances, family members and his staff, and at many points during the letter also romantically expressing his feelings towards Dudley Ward, in part, 'I've only just got back from the official dinner & dance tho. I'm dead beat as its been real hot here all the time & I've been jazzing around some. Sorry for breaking into real Yank sweetie but its being in the canal zone & amongst Yanks ashore which is always bad for my accent...We bought some Panama hats in the filthy little town before motoring out to Naos Island to see the Yank big gun defences which are tunnelled in the rock no doubt to keep the Japs out of the canal some day!!...There are 20,000 British coloured people working on the canal & they gave me a good welcome; they are mostly from Jamaica & smell too revoltingly for words poor brutes!! It was all a proper old pantomime & we all laughed a lot as the Panamanians are very queer people all dagoes of course tho very pompous & dirty. Panama is of course the capital of the republic tho the ship was really tied up...in the Yank canal zone...The dinner was followed by a bloody awful dance about 200 Panamanians beside the motly crowd of Yanks of the night before so it was a terrible squash & dancing almost impossible & such dancers!! My "store girl" was again the only mover tho. I was too tired for more than one with her particularly when she told me I could take her home if I wanted to altho. she was already booked up with a man for that pleasure. I think the man who kept her!!!! Christ she was awful...It all revolted me angel & its a relief to be at sea again, now in the Pacific on our way north to San Diego...And I'm feeling more Fredie sick than ever before to-night beloved & I'm altogether such a sad lonely depressed little David without his vewy vewy own blessed little sweetheart & how I'm dreading the rest of this bloody trip...Dickie [Mountbatten] has been seedy the last 3 days & was on the sick list yesterday (tummy trouble!!) tho he's all right again to-day & we've been yarning for hours in my cabin; such a nice boy & he's written to you this evening tho. he hasn't shown me the letter yet tho I'm going to make him & also apologise for bothering you about his medals...(1st April)...I've had a long yarn with old Joey this evening who is feeling almost as "Sarah sick" as I am "Fredie sick" angel tho not quite or I should say not nearly so!! He's such a dear when you get to know him tho. as you know it takes some time. As for Claud he drifts further & further away from me as a friend & seems more aloof each day & I've become to look on him as merely of use officially tho. he isn't capable of anything else & wld. be out of place & look silly if he even tried to be anything but "the equerry on duty"!!...(2nd April)...'I've "censored" Dickie's letter as you'll see by the alterations angel tho. of course its only a rag letter on his part & he put in those items I made him alter just to annoy me; so I know you'll believe the amendments darling tho. of course he's such a baby & can't possibly understand my view point particularly when he says I take life too seriously!! Of course he can't make me out at all when we go ashore & I take no interest in the bits he picks up for me to dance with except as regards their dancing!! He is naturally out to kiss any woman that attracts him sufficiently if he gets the chance & why not at his age & heart free?! But how glad I am that I'm not heart free beloved one & that on the contrary with my heart is locked up inside YOU which it is so so securely & it seems as if a new lock was fixed on to your safe for my heart each day sweetie. That's a marvellous thought that keeps me going so far away from you tho there's a far more marvellous glorious thought & I'm conceited enough to say knowledge that I've got your precious sacred blessed little heart locked up in me!! An interesting A.L.S., Herman, by Herman Rogers, two pages, 8vo, Cannes, 28th January 1956, to the Duchess of Windsor ('Dear Wallis'). Rogers thanks the Duchess for her letter and continues 'I have been thinking a lot about the Goddard business, and to tell you the truth, the whole thing is rather hazy in my mind. My impression is that you sent for him and that that was why you were so surprised when the uninvited M.D. showed up. My further impression, rather strong, is that you somehow found out later that Baldwin was involved in Goddard's voyage, which also surprised you. Of course, I did not know all the details and projects at the time - there is no reason why I should have been told, but after much searching of my memory, that is the way I think it happened: Baldwin found out that Goddard was coming to Cannes, and tried to make use of him.' In concluding Rogers writes 'The best of luck, and I hope the book will be a great success. Our love to you, and our very best respects to the Duke'. Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Rogers to the Duchess of Windsor at the Waldorf Towers in New York. VG £100 - 120
