Reg. No. DMB 771
Chassis No. C15658
This 5cylinder diesel ERF has a fabulous written history supplied briefly outlined here. It was supplied new to Alexander Brown of Townhead Garage, Symington, Lanarkshire and was named Liddle. Later the vehicle went through two showmans hands before being spotted in 1976 as a restoration project. Sadly no action was taken and it wasn't until the early 1980s that Billy Renwick started a 15 year painstaking restoration resulting in the outstanding vehicle presented here. The attention to detail is outstanding with hand made mudguards in order to get the correct shape and a new toolbox constructed to the original design, many other details are outlined in the written history accompanying the vehicle. Having covered less than 2,000 miles since restoration it is in fine cosmetic order and has always been garaged, it attended the 1993 Oulton Park 60th Anniversary Parade and the ERF Coming Home Parade marking the opening of the new ERF factory. Offered for sale with current V5C documentation and a CD record of the restoration, this is a real opportunity to purchase the best.

Click to view full image... Fowler Road Locomotive No. 15323. Class A9 Built 1918. 7NHP. Double Crank Compound.
Three Speed. Fully sprung. "Excelsior"
Reg. No. HR 3697
This fine example of an A9 Road Locomotive was delivered new to the War Department in December 1918 for military use on munitions haulage. It was one of a batch of ten such engines ordered for the war effort, but too late to see action. It was sold in 1920 to Samuel Jackson and Son, Haulage Contractors of Crewe, Cheshire and used for general haulage by them until 1946. She was sold for scrap in 1948 but was rescued in 1956 by a farmer from Wingerworth near Chesterfield, Derbyshire and put back to work on threshing duties. After a short while the engine was sold for preservation to John Reynolds, Engineers of Doncaster. The Fowler was purchased by Graham Love of Crich, Derbyshire in 1975 who started a long process of restoration including a new boiler and firebox fitted by Stuart Woodbine, the expert boilersmith from that area. Graham's association with the engine started in 1961 before he owned it and later made it famous as one of the first and most prominent members of the Amalgamated Heavy Haulage at the Great Dorset Steam Fair. In 1989 he steamed the engine from Derbyshire all the way to Dorset and then completed the return journey. The Fowler was bought by the present owner a few years ago after Graham passed away and has continued the mechanical restoration. The next hydraulic test is due in 2018 and the engine comes with a current boiler certificate. This magnificent Fowler is now mechanically excellent and is superb on the road, being capable of travelling over 35 miles between water stops in hilly terrain. This is a rare opportunity to purchase a true pedigree road loco.

Click to view full image... Foden 5 Ton Colonial Standard Steam Wagon No. 4086 Built 1913.
Reg. No. M 4848
This wagon was supplied new to C.H. Curtis of Manley, New South Wales Australia in November 1913. It was used for carting stone in a local quarry and general haulage, spending its entire working life in this area. It was found by the late Tom Varley of Gisburn, Lanc's in the 1970s, laying abandoned and derelict on a grazing property owned by a Mrs Kelly at Lake Cargellio, in central NSW. Tom Varley repatriated the wagon and set about a comprehensive restoration program, sending it over to Rory Wolf in Ireland in 1979 for a new firebox. After being rallied for a few years it was sold at the auction of Tom Varley's Todber Steam Museum on 4th August 1984. It was bought by Hans Nagel of Stade, West Germany. He only steamed it on rare occasions, using it mainly as a static exhibit at his Volvo Garage and lorry business.
It was acquired from him by the present owners in August 2004, they embarked on another total nut and bolt restoration, which included skimming the wheels before fitting new solid rubber tyres vulcanised onto the the rims. The boiler received a new front tube plate, tubes and stays and was successfully tested to 340psi. The motion, having been overhauled by Hans Nagel, only required minor attention except for a new LP piston and rings. A new buck was made and fitted and the entire wagon was repainted to a high standard just as it left Foden's works with a red chassis and chocolate body. This lovely wagon is keenly priced and represents potentially good value. The next hydraulic test is due in 2016 and the engine comes with a current boiler certificate.

Click to view full image... Marshall General Purpose Traction Engine No. 88360 Built 1938. 5 NHP. Double Crank Compound.
Reg No. DRO 890
This neat and compact S Type Marshall was built as a 10 ton steam roller and its entire working life was spent in this guise. Being converted to a traction engine in preservation days. The piston valve arrangement was used extensively on many later Marshall products in both single cylinder and compound guise and being built as late as 1938 is one of their last road going steam engines. The engine has been fitted with a higher ratio top gear which is said to give it a good turn of speed on the road. The wheels have been shod with good rubber tyres which give a good ride; a complete set of rolls and headstock are to be supplied with the engine. The Marshall has been laid up for a couple of years and does not have a boiler certificate.
Estimate £40,000 - £50,000

Click to view full image... Aveling and Porter Steam Roller No 5347. Built 1903. 12 Tons Double crank compound. "Allensford"
Reg no. GA 7832
This good example of an early side valve compound Aveling was supplied new to Aberdeen County Council in September 1903 for the sum of £525. A copy of the original build sheet exists and indicates that the actual manufactured weight was in fact 13 tons 14 cwts 9 qts. They however found it too heavy and, after 8 - 10 years sold it to a contractor in Glasgow where it was given its GA (Glasgow) registration. They used it up to the 1950s when it was sold to D.A. Prout, the well known steam contractors from Dymock in Gloucestershire. It was sold for preservation in 1983 to George Strutt of Matlock, Derbyshire, before passing to the current owner in 1985. At this time, some extensive boiler and mechanical restoration was carried out by steam engineers Henry I'Anson and Sons of Bishop Auckland, Co Durham. The roller attended a few local rallies in the early years of ownership, but due to health issues as a result of an injury sustained in a serious accident, it has been laid up and dry stored for over a decade. The hydraulic test certificate expired in 2005. Copies of boiler reports, registration documents, and build sheets are available in the office for inspection.

Click to view full image... Clayton and Shuttleworth Steam Roller No. 34980. Built 1902. 10 Tons. Single cylinder. "Excelsior"
Reg No. XC 9578.
This fine engine is the oldest surviving Clayton and Shuttleworth steam roller in existence (one of only eleven in total) and the only one of her type. She was designed by William Fletcher who was chief draughtsman at Claytons between 1887 and 1906. William Fletcher is highly regarded as one of the leading steam traction engine designers of the period. Having served an apprenticeship with Marshall and Sons of Gainsborough, he went on to work for many leading engine manufacturers and was influential in the design of engines wherever he worked, often redesigning the whole range of engines at each company he worked for. From 1863 until retirement in 1910, he worked for Wallis and Steevens, Charles Burrell, Ransomes Sims and Jefferies, Clayton and Shuttleworth and Davey Paxman among others.
"Excelsior" was sold new to Alfred J. Ward of Egham, Surrey on 18/11/1902 and remained with the company until 1921, when she was sold to Henry Woodham of Catford. She was then sold back to Wards to finish her working life and, in December 1956, was sold to J.W. Hardwick of West Ewell for scrap. She languished there until 1974 when she was sold for preservation to D.J Newton of Chesham, Bucks who kept the engine until 1998. It is thought that the gear train was replaced in 1999. It was then acquired by Neil Williams of Whitchurch, Salop who kept it until 2004, when it was sold to Mark Hitchin of Hilton, Derbyshire.
"Excelsior" is in tip top all round condition and comes with a very satisfactory boiler report (available for inspection) and the next hydraulic test is not due until 2020.
Guide price £40,000 - £45,000.

Click to view full image... Marshall Traction Engine No. 76890. 5 NHP. Built 1923.
Reg No. PY 272. Double crank compound. Two speed. "Wayfarer"
Supplied new to Guisborough County Council in 1923 as a 10 ton steam roller, the Marshall spent its entire working life in this part of Yorkshire. It was bought from the council by the well known North East heavy haulage contractors, Sunter Brothers in (it is thought) the 1960s. The engine was then purchased by the present owner for preservation in the early seventies and converted to a traction engine in the early 1980s. In 1992 it was fitted with a new firebox and boiler barrel and a new set of tubes in 2005. With its overhead valve compound cylinders, differential, governors and finished in well executed Marshall livery, this makes a good looking traction engine. The gears are said to be very good and run quiet, having been modified to give the engine a good turn of speed on the road. The engine comes with a current boiler certificate and has just had its ten yearly hydraulic test - trouble free steaming for years to come!

Click to view full image... MASSEY HARRIS GP 4cylinder petrol TRACTOR
The General Purpose tractor began production in Canada in 1930 and could be considered well ahead of it's time with four wheel drive and an articulated chassis which would not come into tractor design again for another 30 years or so. However, despite the imaginative design the concept did not take off. Although for traction from the equal sized wheels and its ability to cope with rough ground could not be beaten by it's rivals. Unfortunately nor could it's cost and it soon ceased production. This example is in need of restoration and would appear to be a good candidate with its tinwork apparently complete and most of the engine parts evident, however vendors are urged to make up their own minds. The tractor stands helpfully on 9.50-24 pneumatic wheels and tyres allowing for ease of movement!
