1863-66 New Zealand Medal to 936 John Common 2nd Bn 18th Ryl Irish Regt some rubbing to unit, otherwise very fine. With copied roll, listed at actions at Orakau and Nukumaru, born Kings County. The Battle of Orakau was fought over 3 days, the defenders repelled five British assaults. However shortages of food, water and ammunition meant that they could not hold out for much longer. A ceasefire gave the defenders a chance to surrender. However the defenders left the pã and broke through the British lines. At least half of them escaped through a swamp. Mãori casualties were heavy. With 80 thought to be killed; at least 40 more were wounded. Total British casualties during the battle were 17 killed and 52 wounded. (R) £380

1899 East and Central Africa Medal Uganda 1897-98 clasp to Qr Mr S.D. Shaw A.V.C. good very fine. The Army Veterinary Corps, composed of N.C.O's. and other ranks, was formed in 1903 to aid and support the officers of the Army Veterinary Department. In 1906 the two separate arms were amalgamated into one unit - the Army Veterinary Corps. It may well be that Shaw was a Quartermaster with the A.V.D. at the time of the Uganda campaign and that he may not have claimed or been issued his medal until later, hence the initials A.V.C. after his name. A Mr S. D. Shawe is listed for the 'Uganda 1897-98' clasp on the medal roll of Civil Officers. Sold with copied research, ex DNW 19 Sep 2003, sold for £650. (See photo) (R) £800
