Normandy Landings Royal Navy Beach Commando's WW2 Distinguished Service Medal, 1939-1945, Atlantic (France and Germany bar), Africa (North Africa 1942-42 bar), Italy Stars, Defence Medal, BWM and 1992 Malta George Cross 50th Anniversary Medal (1st issue) to A.B. E.G Saunders D/JX 237823 very fine to extremely fine, swing mounted as worn. Edward George Saunders's DSM was announced in the London Gazette dated 14th November 1944 "For gallantry, skill, determination and undaunted devotion to duty during the landing of Allied Forces on the coast of Normandy." Saunders was with Royal Navy Beach Commando Fox who were among the first ashore on Sword Beach (Queen Red) on D-Day. His roll was bodyguard to the Beach Master, later Rear Admiral Teddy Gueritz who was the most senior officer on the beach and responsible for establishing, maintaining and controlling the beachhead during the amphibious phase of the operation.
RNBC Fox was formed at Inverkip Camp in June 1942 and consisted of 10 officers and 65 ratings spilt into 3 parties. RNBC Fox took part in the landings at Algiers and Sicily as well. Sold with family telegram of congratulations on award of DSM, original unit photo of RNBC Fox dated July 1944, 4 reunion/anniversary photos wearing medals of RNBC Fox personnel with names on reverse, other copied research including article about AB S Compston who was wounded and awarded a DSM for D-Day who appears on some of Saunders's reunion photos, Teddy Gueritz's obituary etc. Sold on behalf of the family, never before on the market, from Northampton. WW2 1939-1945, Atlantic Italy Stars and BWM attributed to Able Seaman Albert H. Goldham Merchant Navy about as struck. He was killed in action aged 56 on 19th August 1944 when the SS Wayfarer was torpedoed and sunk by U862 150 miles east of Mozambique with the loss of 51 lives and with no known grave is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial. Sold with Minister of Transport condolence transmittal slip, box of issue addressed to Master A.H. Goldham C/O Miss M.E. Wilson Liverpool, various research including extract from Lloyds List. The Wayfarer was en-route to London from Ceylon carrying a cargo of 3,000 tons of copper and 2,000 tons of coal. (R) £60
