North Russia Military Cross, WWI BWM and Victory Medal to Lieut D.W.T. Gurney (MC un-named as issued) extremely fine, swing mounted as worn. Daniel Walter Thomas Gurney's MC was announced in the London Gazette dated 3rd October 1919 while serving with No 1 Special Coy KRRC, "He displayed consistent gallantry throughout several weeks continuous fighting during the successful advance down the Murmansk railway in April and May 1919. On 15th May, when attacking the enemy north of Medvyeja-Gora, his platoon came under exceedingly heavy machine-gun fire. He dashed forward with his front section, and led his men splendidly till he fell severely wounded just prior to the capture of the position."
With copied extract from KRRC Chronicle, "At about 4pm we occupied the enemy second position, and were faced with a long, wooded ridge at about 400 yards distance. On the right De Salis and Allhusen with Nos 3 and 1 platoons had occupied a bare rocky knoll and Rifleman Boreham was engaging the enemy maxim with a Lewis gun fired over the top of a large rock. On the lefy Maclure with the Rifle Brigade platoon and Jervis with No 2 had gone off with Major Yeats Brown to turn the enemy right. After an uphill fight, in which a Colt machine gun was engaged at point blank range and knocked out by a Lewis gun, the enemy right completely crumpled up and fled. Meanwhile the heavy covering fire from No 3 and a short advance by No 1, in which Allhusen was wounded, had fully occupied the enemy's attention. Consequently Nos 2 and 4 found themselves on the flank and rear of the Bolo, who fled in disorder under a storm of rifle and Lewis gun fire. This action, which was fought over very difficult ground in face of very heavy fire from a confident enemy, was a very creditable start for a Company which had never previously done any field training together. Our success was due to Major Yeats Brown's determined leading, as much as to the endurance of the men, and the excellent shooting of the Lewis gunners. In this fight which lasted for about eight hours, we lost Lieuts Allhusen and Gurney, wounded, and eight other ranks. The enemy left over forty dead on the ground, and we captured two machine guns and many prisoners."
According to the family he lost a leg as the result of his wounds. He was placed on the H.P. list on account of ill health caused by his wounds on 15th July 1920. With copied MIC and research, entered France 24/7/17, died 17/9/85. 1914/15 Tunneller's Distinguished Conduct Medal and 1914 Star trio to 469 Pte J. Lewis 1/2 Mon Regt – T.F. (1/2 Mon R on star, Monmouth R on pair) about very fine and better, DCM & BWM toned. John Lewis's DCM was announced in the London Gazette dated 3rd June 1915, "For conspicuous gallantry, energy, and devotion to duty near Le Toquet from 18th December 1914 to 9th April 1915, when engaged in working underground (continually in water) preparing a mine which was successfully exploded at a later date. This work was very arduous, as the possibility of the German counter-mine being exploded at any moment was ever present."
The Battalion history records, "As has been mentioned earlier, a detachment was drawn from the Battalion in December 1914, for mining operations. It consisted of Captain A. H. Edwards, 2 N.C.Os and 12 men, and was called the 4th Divisional Mining Party. In January it was reinforced by a few men from the 5th South Lancashires. Work was commenced in conditions which the C.R.E. of the Division described as making mining impossible, and certainly their first mine had to be given up when the trenches in its neighbourhood became waterlogged. The second mine was successful, however, despite all difficulties. It was commenced from the cellar of a house a few yards behind the front line, the objective being a row of cottages behind the German forward trenches at Le Touquet. These were suspected of being used as billets and known to harbour some troublesome snipers. When about 500 feet of the mine had been dug, the enemy was heard counter-mining. A branch shaft was run about 50 feet in their direction, in which two men were constantly stationed, alternately listening for the enemy and striking stones with an entrenching tool to deceive him. Meanwhile work in the mine proper continued, and it was eventually charged with 30 bags of gunpowder and 24 boxes of gun-cotton and tamped. Then early one morning in March the artillery bombarded for an hour, and at 8 a.m. the mine was fired. Half a dozen of the group of houses went up in the air, and the casualties must have been heavy. This was the first British mine blown in the War. During the same period the 4th Divisional Mining Party dug a mine from Railway Barricade. The enemy counter-mined and broke on 28 February into the work, and a fierce under-ground hand to hand fight ensued, in which the Germans were eventually worsted. Before evacuating their works they fired a gas grenade, killing one man, the only casualty suffered by the Mining Party. Captain Edwards received the congratulations of the G.O.C. for the success of the party, and was awarded the MC, while Sergeant Yates and Privates Lewis and Morgan received the DCM Soon after this the Mining Party was broken up on the formation of the Tunnelling Companies, and the men returned to the Battalion in time for the battles in May."
