  1900 (Nov 10) Budrick of Cape Town printed pictorial envelope posted from Cape Town to London franked 1d, the enclosed letter on pictorial notepaper from a soldier in 73rd Squadron, Pagets Horse at Makenzie Camp. The letter includes “I am for home, it is a great favour which Lady Churchill (?) & The Hon. Miss Cavendish did for me ...... last week Steel died while going for a farmhouse near Mafeking ..... I will bring you a cartridge shell which I picked up on the battlefield of Mafeking ..... all the letters were lost, the Boers captured the mails twice .....” The cover with a little edge staining, otherwise fine, an interesting letter. £100-120

  Forces Mail - Parcel Cancels. 1901 (Feb 19) Large piece from a registered parcel to the Postmaster General of India at Lahore, endorsed “From Alndin, Indian P.O Official, Army P.O Corps, Bloemfontein”, with G.B ½d (2) + 2d tied by Army P.O 43 datestamps with very scarce circular framed cork type “43 / F.P.O” alongside and “R / FEE PAID” handstamps, transit and arrival datestamps. A very scarce parcel handstamp, especially from an Indian Contingent postal official. Ex Griffith. £200-250

  Railways - Midland T.P.O. 1900-02 Covers and cards (5) and a registered parcel wrapper cancelled “MIDLAND T.P.O / UP” c.d.s (one Cape card to an officer on P&O S.S Formosa, Transport 42, Cape Town), Field P.O 8 single ring c.d.s (used on the T.P.O) or “ARMY POST OFFICE / MIDLAND T.P.O” double ring c.d.s (4, all with G.B stamps, two registration envelopes, also registered parcel piece with five 6d stamps); also similar T.P O cancels on stamps or pieces (11), related picture postcards (4) and Imperial Military Railways tickets (6), most ex George Crabbe, written up on pages in his distinctive style.   British P.O.W Mail. 1900 Covers from Capt. Oliver Nugent, 1st Bn. Kings Royal Rifles, P.O.W in Pretoria, to his wife in England, a stampless cover with circular violet “(arms) / 11 JAN. 1900 / COMMANDANT GENERAAL”, Pretoria c.d.s and Press Censor, and a cover with Transvaal 2½d tied by Pretoria c.d.s (May 3) and blue boxed “GEZIEN, / POSTCENSOR, / PRETORIA, / Z.A.R.”. Nugent was severely wounded and captured at Dundee on October 23rd; the first stampless cover has the recipient’s inscription showing it was written from Rourke Hospital in Pretoria, the later stamped cover from the officer’s P.O.W camp at the Staats Model School in Pretoria. Minor creasing, the second cover with closed tear. (2). £140-160

  British P.O.W Mail. 1900 Covers from British P.O.Ws in Pretoria sent via Mozambique franked 2½d, one from Lt. L.A Myburgh, Kitcheners Horse, to his fiancée in Wynberg with violet boxed “GEZIEN, / POSTCENSOR, / PRETORIA, / Z.A.R” and Press Censor, 7 May c.d.s; the other to England with censor label tied by 6 April c.d.s, the stamp uncancelled, a few opening faults or folds. (2). £100-120

  British P.O.W Mail. 1900 (Mar 7) Cover to “Lt. Colonel J.F Burn-Murdoch, The Royal Dragoons, Natal Field Force, South Africa” endorsed “From T.D Pilkington, 1Lt. 1.R.D, Prisoner of War”, a Transvaal 2½d cancelled at Pretoria (Mar. 27), backstamped at Lourenco Marques and Durban, censored with a blue “G” and tick, Press Censor cachet. The enclosed seven page letter, censored with blue crayon “G, 9/3/00”, describes his capture and move to Pretoria and those captured, killed or wounded in the action, 115 British officers are now in the camp with more arriving regularly, he briefly describes the camp and lists the other cavalry officers there. The cover with opening tears at left, otherwise fine, very unusual with the enclosed letter, interestingly not posted until 18 days after it was censored. £150-180

  Mozambique. 1899-1902 Censored covers (14) and a front, from Lourenco Marques to Transvaal (2, cover + front with Boer censors), Cape Colony (2) or Natal; or from Transvaal (5), Cape (2) or Natal (3) to Lourenco Marques, two covers with Durban censor seal type IE, one Lourenco Marques cover to Cape Town handstamped “T” and “50” with a “100” charge mark, an unusual stampless cover from an officer in the Suffolk Regt. posted at F.P.O 27 to an officer on the S.S “Formosa” Transport No. 42 at Durban and redirected to Lourenco Marques with ten backstamps. Also 1901 cover from the Portuguese Consulate General in Pretoria to Natal. (16). £350-400

  Mozambique. 1899-1900 Covers sent via Mozambique, comprising 1899 (Oct 16) cover from Johannesburg to Durban with white Boer censor seal type 2; 1900 (July 29) stampless cover with Mafeking squared circle, F.P.O B.O c.d.s and a G.B 2½d applied in transit in London; 1900 cover from Transvaal to a P.O.W at Simonstown with British and Boer censor seals; and Cape 1d lettercard franked 2d posted from Cape Town to Pretoria, written by R. Tindall, P.O.W on board “Lake Erie” at Table Bay about to depart for St. Helena. (4). £200-240

1925
  1920 (Feb 14) Cover franked 1d + 1/- pair cancelled at Cape Town, addressed to Beaufort West, endorsed “Per Aerial Post” and handstamped red “CARRIED BY / AEROPLANE”, carried by Handley-Page “Pioneer” trial flight from Wynberg to Johannesburg which crashed near Beaufort West, the salvaged mail carried on by rail. Also a piece of wood from the aeroplanes propeller which was previously glued to the cover, the cover stained as a result and also glued together, still very scarce with only about twenty covers recorded from this flight. £100-150

Lt Tommy Rose A.F.C”, carried by Tommy Rose on his record breaking solo flight of 6 days 7 hours 5 minutes to Croydon, with circular cachet “CAPETOWN MUNICIPAL AIR-PORT / 3 MAR 1936 / WINGFIELD”, posted upon arrival in London franked 1½d, reverse signed by Rose. Also contemporary news cutting and photo of the plane. Fine and scarce, 18 covers flown, ten of these signed by Rose. Photo on Page 236. £300-350

  Schlesinger Air Race. 1936 Covers carried on the Portsmouth to Johannesburg air race, flown by A.E Clouston who crashed in Southern Rhodesia, continuing in another plane from Bulawayo to Johannesburg with G.B ½d cancelled in Portsmouth (45 covers carried); flown by Tommy Rose and J. Bagshaw who retired from the race at Cairo, with G.B stamps cancelled in London and Egypt stamps in Cairo (100 covers carried of which 25 were posted in Cairo); flown by Captain S. Halse who crashed in Southern Rhodesia, with G.B ½d cancelled at Portsmouth and two Southern Rhodesia 1d stamps cancelled at Salisbury (Oct 7 & 12), 24 covers flown; or flown by Victor Smith, who retired from the race at Khartoum but continued to South Africa in easy stages, with G.B ½d cancelled at Portsmouth and South Africa 6d at George (18 Jan 37), 35 covers flown. A fine group, all four signed by the pilots. (4). £400-500

  1936-37 Record flights between England and South Africa comprising 1936 (May 3) cover posted at Harrogate, then flown by H.L Brook in his 36HP Praga Baby with cachet “England - Cape Town Ultra light planes, in record time 16 days 20hrs” and South Africa ½d cancelled at Cape Town; and 1937 (Nov 13) cover posted in London then flown by F/O A.E Clouston and Mrs Kirby Green in a DH Comet to Cape Town in 45hrs 2mins with Cape Town arrival c.d.s and Wingfield Air-Port cachet (both Nov 16), 38 covers carried. Click to view full image... 1938 (Oct 6) Stampless cover addressed “Dundee Press Greetings to Press of South Africa” flown by Imperial Airways Short-Mayo “Mercury” from Dundee to South Africa, which included the worlds longest non-stop seaplane flight of 9672km achieved in 42 hrs 5 mins to the mouth of the Orange River where the plane refuelled. Hand carried, signed by the Captain D.C.T Bennett and First Officer I. Harvey, endorsed by Bennett “Mercury, Scotland to S. Africa, 6th - 8th Oct. 1938”. Very rare, one of two covers hand carried on this historic flight, which also carried normal Christmas mail. Ex Jeidel. Photo on Page 236. £500-600

Click to view full image... 1939 (Feb 5) Stampless cover to L.A Wyndham in Cape Town endorsed “By favour of Alex Henshaw Esq” and signed by Henshaw, both sides with circular “LONDON EAST AIRPORT / GRAVESEND” (the cachet on the front dated 5-2-39, on the reverse signed and dated on 7.2.39) and boxed “CITY OF CAPE TOWN / MUNICIPAL AIRPORT” (two strikes dated 6 FEB and 8 FEB on the front, 8 FEB cachet on reverse). Henshaw flew from Gravesend to Cape Town in 39 hours 23 minutes then made the return journey in 39 hours 3 minutes, a record which still stands. A very rare cover flown in both directions, 32 covers carried on the outward flight and 12 on the return flight with fewer of these carried on both flights. Photo on Page 236. £500-600
1931
  1947 (Jan 14) Air letter to South Africa with South Africa 3d tied by Egypt Postage Prepaid datestamp, fire damaged, with accompanying 1942 (Feb 7) letter from the S.A Army Postal Directorate Middle East Forces, “the accompanying letter card was salvaged from a quantity of mail which was damaged by fire in the Western Desert on 19.1.42”. A mail truck was stolen from A.P.O 13 attached to 1. Div. H.Q at Mersa Matruh and subsequently found burnt out. Scarce and unusual. £120-150
