Click to view full image... 1930 Kaisar-I-Hind 1st Class gold Medal with floral suspension bar, attributed to The Reverend William Henry Jackson good extremely fine in HM Mint Calcutta box of issue. The award was announced in the London Gazette dated 1st January 1930 for his pioneer work at the Blind School, St Michael's Mission, Kemmendine, Burma. Sold with original letter of congratulations from Royal Normal College for the Blind, Norwood, dated 31/1/30, original letter from Chief Secretary to Burmese Government with regard to rules relating to the decoration dated 21/11/30 and his signed reply, 1912 Royal Warrant with regard to the award and a 32 page Eagle booklet titled "Blind Eagle, Father Jackson of Burma" by Stanley Sowton published 1950.
William Jackson was born in 1889 and by the age of 2 had lost the sight in both eyes. When he was 11, he attended the Royal Normal College for the Blind, Norwood and then Oxford University where he obtained an honours degree in History & Theology. He was ordained from Leeds Theological College in 1912. After 5 years working in the parishes of Ilford & Hoxton, he received a telegram in 1917 from his brother in-law in Burma asking him to come and run the Blind School at Kemmendine, which he duly accepted. The school had 80 pupils and when he arrived in Burma Jackson adopted all the local customs, sleeping on the floor, eating with his hands and dressing like the natives so that he would be accepted by sharing their lives in every way. Within 6 months, he had learned Burmese and invented a phonetic script, making out a matrix on old kerosene tins and using a second hand mangle as a printing press. Very quickly he had blind boys learning to read in Burmese by the new Jackson-Braille method more quickly than their sighted cousins in ordinary day schools. He travelled the countryside looking for blind children to be educated at his school. He instigated the building of a new home for the blind pupils and introduced many inventive ideas to aid them moving around the building. He came back to England for the occasional break, but was never happier than in Burma, but by 1931 his health was starting to deteriorate. "The Kemendine mission community were extremely proud when His Excellency the Governor, Sir Charles Innes, paid an official visit to Kemendine, accompanied by his retinue of officials, for the sole purpose of bestowing on Father Jackson the gold medal of the Kaisar-I-Hind. The investiture took place with Father Jackson in bed." He died in the middle of December 1931 in Burma and was buried in Kemendine cemetery. A truly remarkable man. Sold on behalf of The Royal National College For The Blind. (See photo) (R) £1600
