Challenger and 1908 Messina Earthquake Medal un-named as issued, QSA & LSGC with contact marks, nearly very fine and better, board mounted for display. David Charles Nute survived the sinking of HMS Ocean in the Dardanelles 18/3/15. With copied service paper and ship research, Nute was born in Ford, Devonport 12/12/68, enlisted 10/1/90, promoted ERA 3 10/1/93, ERA 2 10/1/97, CERA 2 1/4/99 and CERA 1 1/4/04, he was on the armoured cruiser Sutlej when she took part in the Messina rescue operations, discharged 3/7/19. Click to view full image... 1909 Women's Social & Political Union Medal For Valour inscribed Hunger Strike, to Nelly Crocker, Birmingham 1909 hallmarks, suspension bar engraved September 4th 1909, second bar engraved March 4th 1912, For Valour brooch bar, nearly extremely fine. Ellen (Nelly) Crocker was born in 1872, was a speaker at the first meeting of Bath WSPU in 1907, was one of the main speakers at the Hyde Park Rally in June 1908, became in WSPU Organiser in Yorkshire, campaigned with Adela Pankhurst in the April 1909 Sheffield by-election. For the next 3 years she was mostly based in Nottingham and was arrested on 29th June 1909 after taking part in the deputation to the House of Commons. In September 1909 she was arrested in Leicester after disrupting a meeting which included Winston Churchill and was imprisoned the same day, but was released after being on hunger strike for 4 days. She took part in the Black Friday demonstrations in Parliament Square November 1910. On 4th March 1912 she was arrested with 2 other women for smashing windows with a hammer in a Sloane Square Post Office, this was her 8th and final arrest and she left the WSPU in 1912. In 1949, she wrote about her suffragette life and presented them to Girton College, Cambridge. She died in 1962 and left the bulk of her estate to the Suffragette Fellowship. (See photo) (Y) £3500

  Rare Royal Flying Corps Albert Medal (Bronze) "Presented by His Majesty to 1st Class Air Mechanic Harrie Stephen Harwood Royal Flying Corps for gallantry in saving life in France on the 3rd January 1916" nearly extremely fine. It was announced in the London Gazette dated 19th May 1916 in conjunction with 2 other recipients: "On the 3rd January, 1916, at about 3pm, a fire broke out inside a large bomb store belonging to the Royal Flying Corps, which contained nearly 2,000 high explosive bombs, some of which had very large charges, and a number of incendiary bombs which were burning freely. Major Newall at once took all necessary precautions, and then, assisted by Air Mechanic Simms, poured water into the shed through a hole made by the flames. He sent for the key to the store, and with Corporal Hearne, Harwood and Simms entered the building and succeeded in putting out the flames. The wooden cases containing the bombs were burnt, and some of them were charred to a cinder." <\n>With 8 copied pages of service record, he was born in Malton on 10th July 1884, he was educated at Worcester Grammar School, after he school he worked in the Audit Office of the North Staffordshire Railway Co, enlisted in RFC aged 30 on 19th May 1915 with his trade listed as Motor Cyclist, landed France 5/9/15, originally a dispatch rider, he served as an Observer on Probation in France from Oct 1916 to Feb 1917 and passed all tests, returned to UK 7/3/17, discharged to commission 23/5/17, he was injured in an aero accident at Norwich 19/10/17, served some time at Turnberry School of Aerial Gunnery, promoted Lieut 24/11/18, served with 141 Sqn, transferred to Unemployed List 31/10/19, appointed Pilot Off on probation in Admin & General Duties Branch 18/6/40, promoted Flying Off 18/6/41 and Flt Lt 1/1/43, relinquished his commission 10/2/54 and he died in 1975. There was only 1 gold and 10 bronze Albert Medals awarded to the RFC in WWI. Never before on the market. (See photo) (R) £6500

Click to view full image...Click to view full image... 1916 Faversham Munitions Factory Explosion Edward Medal (Bronze) 2nd reverse and KGVI Special Constabulary Long Service Medal to George Gilham (George J. Gilham on Constabulary) good very fine and better. The award of the Edward Medal was announced in the London Gazette dated 16th March 1917 to 8 men including George Gilham "On account of their gallant action on the occasion of an explosion which occurred at Faversham on the 2nd of April 1916." <\n>The factory was in full production to cope with the shell crisis shortage on the Western Front. A pile of empty TNT bags had been left outside against the wall of Building 833, a building which contained 150 tonnes of high explosives. A spark from a nearby chimney set fire to the bags which were impregnated with TNT powder. The fire was first spotted around noon and the fire brigade were summoned and workers were employed in trying to dampen down or remove the explosive from Building 833 and several other nearby buildings. Some 30 to 40 minutes after the fire was noted and before the fire brigade could get to work, the building exploded causing the deaths of 108 people, some killed in the blast and others by falling debris scattered over a vast area. (Pte 1/E. Surr R on Star, Cpl 1/E. Surr R on MM) very fine and better. George Fossey's MM was announced in the London Gazette dated 11th November 1916. He was transferred to 14 Field Hospital on 28th July 1916 suffering from shell shock. This was just several days after the 4th Army attack on High Wood in which his Bn was involved, so highly likely this is where he became a casualty and also where he won his MM. Sold with 4 Army Temperance Medals, 2 shoulder titles (no lugs), ID Discs (1 tin and 1 compressed card) and photo in later life. With copied MIC, MM card and casualty list, a pre-war regular with service in India, he landed France 16/8/14, clasp & roses confirmed, promoted Cpl 23/3/16 and Sgt 8/5/17.   WWI Boswell brothers groups with 1. 1914 Star trio and Memorial Plaque to 8473 Pte J. Boswell North'n R. (2/North'n R on Star, James Boswell on plaque. He was killed in action on 9th May 1915 and with no known grave is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial. With original Soldiers Small Book, he was born in Towcester, enlisted 19/4/07, landed France 6/11/14, issued clasp & roses. 2. 1914-15 Star trio to 9941 Pte J. Boswell North'n R. Joseph Boswell landed France 4/12/14, wounded slightly in jaw 9/5/15 at Richburg which will be the same action his brother James was killed. 3. 1914-15 Star trio to 59058 A.Bmbr W.A. Boswell R.A. (R.F.A. on Star), landed France 17/1/15. With copied MICs, Soldiers Died, CWGC and casualty list, generally very fine and better. (R) £400

With copied MIC and Tank attestation paper, James Henderson was born in Dundee, landed France 8/10/14, not issued bar & roses, MIC states transferred to M.M. Police 22/9/16, returned to Greys at some time, to AR 19/9/34, transferred to R Sigs 30/1/39. (R) £280
