With GOC certificate of appreciation to Pte Kelly dated 3/11/36 "For gallant conduct at Jaffa when on sentry duty during the disturbances in Palestine 1936".   Unique WW2 Airborne Operations pilot's Distinguished Service Order, The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire Officer's Breast Badge (OBE) (Civil), 1943 Air Force Cross, 1939-1945, Air Crew Europe (Atlantic bar) Stars, Defence Medal, BWM with MID oakleaf, KGVI IND IMP Air Efficiency Award, Belgian Order of Leopold Knight's Brest badge with Palme (Mil), Belgian Croix de Guerre with Palme and Netherlands Silver Flying Cross to Wing Commander Ernest Leonard Archer (Air Efficiency named Act Sqn Ldr E.L. With boxes of issue for DSO (DS&S), OBE & AFC (Royal Mint), Leopold (Van Larebeke) & Dutch Cross (Gaunt & Son). DSO was announced in the London Gazette dated 17th August 1945, OBE was announced in the London Gazette dated 14th June 1975 as Director of Personnel Boots Co Ltd, Nottingham, AFC was announced in the London Gazette dated 2nd June 1943, MID was announced in the London Gazette dated 24th September 1941. <\n>With copy of typed recommendation for Dutch Flying Cross, "S/Ldr Archer completed his 60th and 61st operations by leading his flight to Arnhem on two occasions. His untiring energy was undoubtedly a main factor in the success of our part of Operation "Market", made complicated by the necessity of using an advanced base. His record of operations would be difficult to equal - he was a member of 59 Squadron, employed during the British invasion scare, in day and night bombing of the channel ports. His Squadron was practically annihilated. After a period of Staff work he came to 38 Group and took part successfully in the invasion of Normandy. He was also successful in numerous flights with arms and ammunition for the Maquis. His zeal and ability throughout all this period, during which he was also engaged in helping to train two British Airborne Divisions, has been an inspiration to his flight, and a mainstay to his Squadron Commander." With original Dutch award certificate dated 31st July 1945 and original Dutch typed translation, "Distinguished himself during the operations near Arnhem from September 17 to 25, by deeds of initiative, courage and perseverance and showing, in every respect, an uncommon devotion to duty and a great tenacity of purpose." With original Belgian joint award certificate for Order of Leopold and Croix de Guerre for courage and bravery during the liberation of Belgium dated 16th January 1947, original London Gazette confirming Belgian awards dated 24th June 1947 and original 1941 MID certificate. <\n>He enlisted in the RAFVR in 1938, Promoted Flg Off 28/4/41, Act Sqn Ldr 14/10/41, Act Wing Cmdr 11/11/44, first training flight 15/1/39, was commissioned from Sgt 28/4/40, posted to 59 Sqn of Coastal Command flying Blenheims June 1940, first Op 5/7/40 and completed 47 Ops with 59 Sqn by 23/11/40 which included day and night bombing raids, sweeps, reconnaissance for enemy shipping, moon patrols etc. Posted to No 2 School of Aviation at Andover Dec 1940, 42 OTU, 1526 BAT Flight at Thruxton 11/11/41, fulfilling a range of training and instructing including considerable Beam Flying. On 11th February 1942 while flying a Beam Exercise he broke radio silence over the Channel when he spotted the German capital ships Scharnhorst, Gneisenau and Prinz Eugen making their dash up the English Channel on Op Cerebus to get them back to German ports. He was apparently threatened with a court martial for breaking radio silence. January 1943 found him posted to HQ Army Co-operation Command flying a mixture of aircraft, before joining the airborne forces 296 Sqn in November 1943 flying Albermarles, where he conducted 77 training flights dropping paratroopers or towing gliders, in addition to 2 supply drops to the French Maquis up to the end of May 1944. He was selected to lead a flight of 6 aircraft on Op Tonga to drop Royal Engineer Pathfinders from 5th Para Bde on 5/6/44 prior to D-Day whose task was to attack gun emplacements and set up a flarepath for the invasion gliders to follow. After 8 of the 9 Paras had jumped, he suddenly saw another Albermarle in the same airspace and only just missed the other aircraft after taken violent evasive action. They had to fly around again to drop Lieut Micheley RE who was in command of the stick. On return to England they were quickly turned around and towed a Horsa glider from 6th Air Landing Bde for the main D-Day landings as part of Op Mallard. After D-Day he conducted 5 Ops over France in conjunction with SAS missions and supply drops to the Maquis as well as the continuation of Airborne training. <\n>He dropped a Horsa glider at Arnhem on the first day of operations 17/9/44 and conducted a second Horsa lift to Arnhem the next day. He was promoted Act Wg Comdr and appointed CO of 644 Sqn 10/11/44 who were about to convert from Albermarle to Halifax bombers and were used for towing the heavy Hamilcar gliders. He flew a range of missions including tactical bombing over Germany, dropping supplies to SOE and Norwegian resistance, on 23/2/45 after dropping supplies his aircraft was shot up by ships in Skaggerak and returned on 3 engines. He led his Sqn in the final major airborne assault of the war with Op Varsity, the Rhine Crossing on 24/3/45 where he towed a Hamilcar loaded with 17 Pounder Gun & Lorry. The war in Europe ended on 8th May 1945. On 11th May he flew 16 passengers on Op Doomsday to Oslo where he is recorded as being one of the signatories on the Surrender of German Forces in Norway. The final flight in his log book is 5/10/45 and his last day of service 19/12/45. <\n>Sold with a huge array of supporting documentation, 31 photos including aircraft, gliders, self at the Palace etc, letters, books, RAF officer's peaked cap etc including his 2 Pilot's Log Books, Top Secret HQ No 38 Group RAF Operation Order No 531 for Op Varsity (Copy No 31), Report on Op Varsity, routine orders, letters and correspondence with various authors, programmes, invitations, menus, RAF Flying Clothing Card, language phrase card, Aircraft Notes publications for Lancaster and Halifax, WW2 644 Sqn book by Sandy Barr, newspaper cuttings, book extracts, flying handbooks, letters of congratulations on awards, letter of transmission for Air Efficiency dated 4/4/50, 644 Sqn framed badge and photos of him being presented it, printed summaries of SOE Ops by 38 Group, a CD of the Oral History interview recorded by IWM and printed summary, Release book etc etc. A superb record of an Airborne Operations pilot's war. Kenny P.O. R.N. (later CPO) (H.M.S. Ocean on LSGC, WW2 un-named as issued) some contact marks, mainly nearly very fine and better, swing mounted as worn. With original cloth Certificate of Service, 2 Gunnery History Sheets, 2 Trade Certificates and Admiralty Certificate of Appreciation on leaving the service. John Patrick Kenny was born 20/12/19, enlisted as a Boy 19/5/37, he joined the battle cruiser Repulse on 13/6/40 and his trade was AA III (Anti-Aircraft). The Repulse was sunk after being hit by 5 torpedoes, along with the battleship HMS Prince of Wales off the Malayan coast by Japanese bombers on 10th December 1941 and Kenny being employed on AA duties would have been very busy on the day the 2 ships were sunk and the Repulse is thought to have shot down 2 Japanese bombers and damaged a further 8. He must have been very lucky to survive the sinking which cost the lives of 508 of the crew, but also to get away from Singapore before its capture by the Japanese. <\n>He is listed on the shore establishments of Drake I and Assegai from 11/12/41 to 12/4/43 before joining the battleship HMS Warspite on 13/4/43 until 9/10/43. He would therefore have been on board when the Warspite was struck by 3 Fritz X Glider bombs while supporting the Allied landings at Salerno on 16/9/43 which put her out of action for 6 months. He later served on HMS Devonshire from 30/3/44 to 10/4/45. During the Korean War, he served on the aircraft carrier HMS Ocean which deployed twice in 1952 and then 1953. He was awarded his LSGC 12/9/53 and discharged to pension 7/6/65 in rank of CPO with trade Gunlayer Armourer 1st Class. His service record also lists he had a bullet scar to his left thigh which was not there on enlistment, so he was either wounded or involved in an accident. All medals and bars are confirmed on his record. (See photo) (R) £250
