A COWRIE SHELL HEADDRESS Possibly a Mwami headdress of the Lega tribe from the Democratic Republic of Congo, of unusual form with a face in the centre with cowrie shell eyes and red painted nose and mouth, the main part of the headdress is domed with a wide rim surrounding the base and a curved cylindrical protrusion emerging from the crest which terminates in a fibrous tuft, the surface of the headdress is covered in cowrie shells with bead elements, with a fringe of fibre surrounding the base, 34cm high. £100-200
