Meroitic Period, Circa 2nd - 3rd Century A.D.
With a bulbous, almost spherical body and a ring foot the vessel has a long cylindrical neck with a slightly flared mouth, with red slip decoration with stylised birds framed in tendrils and dashes, the shoulder of the vessel with a wave pattern surmounted by a pattern of circles and stars, 29cm high.

Roman Period, Circa 1st - 2nd Century A.D.
With the figure of a recumbent lion serving as the akroterion, his head facing forward and gazing down, with the mane surrounding his jowls and incised whiskers above his wide mouth, he sits on a ledge decorated in relief with two foliate scrolls and stylized leaves, with an egg-and-dart design on the diagonal and chevrons below, 42cm wide.

Depicted nude, with the weight on his right leg and his left knee bent, wearing an animal skin over his left shoulder and arm and carrying a variety of fruits and pine cones, unworked at the back, 56cm high.

Footnotes: Silvanus is a woodland deity who protects the forests and countryside; his name deriving from the Latin word silva, meaning 'wood; forest'. The cult of Silvanus became popular during the reign of Hadrian, as the deity became associated with Hadrian's favourite, Antinous, especially with his associations with youth and fertility.

Circa 1st - 2nd Century A.D.
Naturalistically modelled, the bull is depicted with a muscular body and heavy flanks, with its head and horns lowered and his foreleg raised as if about to charge, Representations of bulls were numerous in the Roman world and were associated with Jupiter and Bacchus, 5.6cm long.

Circa 2nd - 4th Century A.D.
With loose folds draped over his left shoulder and wrapped around his waist exposing his chest with defined musculature, Jupiter stands with his weight on right leg, his left hand on his hip and his right reaching out with palm raised, his facial features simply cast with his beard and large curls both defined in individual tresses, 9.7cm high.
Provenance: Reputedly found by Norman Parker at Priest Wood, Cromwell, on Saturday September 17th 1938, during a Sunday school picnic tea, a note accompanies the piece with wording to this effect written at the time of discovery.

Circa 1st Century B.C. - 1st Century A.D.
With a bulbous piriform body, the shoulder decorated with three encircling incised bands, the slim neck terminating in the trefoil lip which is covered by a hinged lid consisting of a sheet of bronze with a small waisted protrusion, the handle separately cast with a decorative tendril design where it joins the lip and terminating in an intricate gorgon head, 31cm high.

Circa 2nd Century A.D.
Depicted bearded, with curly hair falling across his forehead, his lips parted, the large forehead, strongly furrowed brow, short nose and thick lips all suggest that this figure has achondroplasia, one of the most common forms of dwarfism. This is a particularly fine depiction with a sense of Pathos and is most unusual being in marble rather than the more ubiquitous bronze or terracotta, 35cm high.
Provenance: British private collection since the late 1990s, prior to that UK art market,
Footnotes: Dwarfs seem to have been a source of curiosity for Greeks and Romans, particularly in Alexandria, where dwarfs are often found depicted in theatrical or comical poses.

Click to view full image... A ROMAN BRONZE BALSAMARIUM IN THE FORM OF A YOUNG BOY'S HEAD
Circa 1st Century A.D.
Large eyes with cut-out pupils gaze out looking slightly upwards, with the hair, arranged in flame-like locks covers the head, with two circular attachments either side of the crown, which is hinged to allow access, allow the vessel to be suspended from chains, These were containers for incense, perfume or cosmetics and were often in the form of a grotesque figure, 10.3cm high.

Circa 2nd Century A.D.
Depicting a draped male figure reclining on a couch, with a slave and a three-legged table below and a pedimental structure above, 40cm high.
Provenance: Acquired from the American art market, New York, 2000. Previously acquired from Sotheby's, New York. Accompanied by a copy of the Sotheby's valuation listing the piece, dated to 30 July 1984.
Literature: Images of the deceased reclining on a dining couch were a common motif in both Greek and Roman funerary art. It is often believed that these show the deceased dining in the afterlife, as if dining alongside the mourners at the ritual funerary banquet. For an example with similar iconography, see the marble cinerary urn for M. Domitius Primegenius in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (Accession number 27.122.2a, b). It shows the same three-legged table, and couch with turned legs, and tiled background. The couch legs and three-legged table are also evident in the funerary relief of M. Aemilius Durises in the Rheinisches Landesmuseum, Bonn, Germany.

Circa 2nd - 3rd Century A.D.
The central hollow disc is decorated with a band of alternate black and white enamel surrounding an inner ring of bright blue. It is flanked by inlaid terminals of adorsed crescentic lunettes set with white enamel terminating in a small disc of red enamel with a bright blue area of enamel between, 4.9cm high.

Circa 4th Century B.C.
A silver gilt mount of two confronting eagles with hooked beaks, with the gilt providing accents and details to the two birds, the bodies and wings represented in a stylised manner with incised loop shapes, the gilt on silver decoration is very much typical of Thracian pieces, with three small functional holes sit around the edges of the eagles, 4.6cm high.
