Click to view full image... A very interesting World War Two Prisoner of War group of items to Private Gordon Hanger of 1/7th Battalion the Queens Royal Regiment (West Surrey). Part of 44 Infantry Division. Private Hanger was a professional boxer before the war, joined the army and took part in the Battle of El Alamein where he was wounded in the shoulder and captured. After treatment in hospitals in Italy and Germany, he was transferred to Starlag VIIIB, before being repatriated to the UK in 1944. The items consist of: a boxing medal for runner-up, Inter Unit Boxing Championships 1941-42, 44th Division, British Boxing Board licence, a stitched cotton belt showing his unit, places served and POW number, flanking Starlag VIIIB, a bible, stamped Starlag 344 detailing his capture and treatment in various hospitals, confinement in POW camps and repatriation in the frontispiece, a crucifix and beads, a notebook, newspaper clippings pertaining to his capture and service, and relating to Prince Sapieha, Polish envoy to the King.
