Click to view full image...Click to view full image... 1883 Albert Medal (bronze) For Saving Life on Land, engraved "Presented in the name of HER MAJESTY to Police Constable James Dee for gallantry in attempting to save life at a fire in Swansea on 20th of January 1883", small bruise to left side, otherwise good very fine, with Philips Bros case of issue. Also with un-hallmarked gold Maltese cross medallion engraved "Presented to P.C. Jas Dee for heroic conduct at fire in Swansea Jany 1883 by Llanelly admirers."The Illustrated Police News dated 27th January 1883 reported: Early on Sunday morning a fire broke out in an oilman's shop in Lower Oxford Street, Swansea. There were 8 persons in the house. The man and 2 grown-up sons escaped by dropping from the upper windows, and a woman and a baby got out through a door which was burst open for them. A child about 2 years old was rescued by P.C. Payne. P.C. Dee went into a room where the fire was burning furiously, and carried out a boy about 12, who died in a few minutes afterwards from the effects of burns. He went back into the burning chamber to search for another boy, about 14, but someone in the crowd stated that this boy had been got out by another way. Dee accordingly left the building. After the fire was extinguished, the charred remains of this boy was found under the bed. All the contents of the premises were destroyed. Police constable Dee was badly burnt, and is lying at the hospital in a precarious condition." Constable Dee was presented the Albert Medal by the Mayoress of Swansea on 21st March 1883. Just 5 months later P.C. Dee was brought before the Watch Committee for a charge of assault. A disturbance took place in Oxford Street, where Dee took hold of one of the men in the crowd, demanded his address, and because he refused to give it, he took out his staff and struck the man. In reply to the charge, Dee stated that complaints were made to him of a man pushing people off the pavement. He asked him for his name and address, but he not only refused to divulge it, but threatened him with violence. What he did was in self defence. During the course of the inquiry, it was also stated that Dee had been drinking that day in a public house while he was on duty. He was severely reprimanded, fined £1 for the assault and reduced from a merit class to a second class constable. With 3 copied newspaper articles. (See photo) (R) £5000
