CIRCLE OF JEAN AUGUSTE DOMINIQUE INGRES (1780-1827) Portrait of a French Cardinal. An exceptional fine portrait on canvas. The sitter depicted in red, with blue collar, and wearing Royal honours This portrait is thought to depict the Cardinal who consecrated Charles X of France, May 29th, 1825 and is inscribed verso. By repute this work is thought to have been painted in the studio of Ingres by a pupil 35cm x 26cm Re-lined in a very good giltwood frame Additional Notes: "Property of Baron A Meyendorff, Presented to the LSE Aug 1946" written verso On the LSE's website, there is a piece about the beginnings of the "Russian Collection" held at the LSE. I set out an extract below which records Baron Alexander Meyendorff as being a reader in institutional politics at the LSE from 1922 to 1934 The Baron was from a noble family and a man of means so might it be the case that he would only have gifted the LSE a painting that he considered to be of significant value? His mother was a princess as were his two wives. His father was in the senior diplomatic service. All would seem to present interesting routes by which ownership of an important portrait of the Cardinal might have come into possession of Baron Meyendorff Baron Meyendorff served briefly under Aleksandr Keren<\h>sky, head of the Provisional Government that took power after the overthrow of Czar Nicholas II. He left St. Petersburg with his wife in August £3,000-£4,000
