FOOTNOTE: Malva Schalek was born into a German speaking Jewish family, and studied art in Munich at The Women's Academy. In March 1938 she fled Vienna after the introduction of anti-semitic laws by the Nazis. I 1942 she was forced into the Theresienstadt ghetto where she continued to draw and document her surroundings. After refusing to do a portrait of a collaborationist doctor, Malva Schalek was deported to Auschwitz concentration camp were she perished on 24 May, 1944
