He was particularly fascinated by the large Edwardian department store known as 'Hoopers' which in its day was the 'Harrods' of Tunbridge Wells. He often painted crowds of people hurrying past the store or pausing to stop and gaze longingly at the items in their opulent window displays £500-£700

He lived at 33a Queens Road, in a basement flat which was part of a modest detached Victorian villa, with Hilda, his housekeeper. He lived a somewhat unorthodox and Bohemian life with Hilda who was not only his housekeeper but also his model and mistress. He remained living here and worked right up until the time of his death aged 77 in 1959 £250-£350
