* Tenison was a noted cleric: he attended the Duke of Monmouth's execution, preached Queen Mary's funeral sermon and also preached at Nell Gwynne's funeral, he attended King William's deathbed, crowned Queen Anne in 1702 and crowned George I in 1714. He was Bishop of Lincoln and, later, Archbishop of Canterbury from 1694-1715. Despite these achievements, Swift described him as 'a very dull man who had a horror of anything like levity in the clergy, especially of whist'. ++ Lined; associated retouching £400-600 (+ 26.4% BP*)

Provenance: By direct descent in the family of the sitter Literature: Elise S. Beach, 'Thomas Beach - A Dorset Portrait Painter' (London, 1934), ref.155 (p.63). Beach painted a dozen portraits of the Helyar family of Coker Court, Yeovil, in the years 1768-1769. Mrs Helyar's pocket book records that, on April 18th, 1769, "The Painter came down." Beach also painted Mrs Michel (at Dewlish) and Maria Phelips (at Montacute) on the same visit. It is thought that Beach painted only about twenty portraits in the entire decade. (Beach, ibid., p.6). The Sedgehill reference relates to further land in Wiltshire also owned by the Helyar family in the late 18th Century. ++ Lined (bears inscription: John Helyar AEt 15 AoDo 1768); some associated retouching and some retouching over old, minor damages (eg on forehead); some craquelure; needs a clean £4000-6000 (+ 26.4% BP*)
