ELIZABETH ADELA STANHOPE FORBES, ARWS (1859-1912) AUTUMN BREEZE Oil on canvas laid onto masonite 58.5 x 49.5cm. * Forbes' work was distinctive amongst the artists of the Newlyn School for stepping aside from hard-nosed social realism and presenting subjects that addressed less tangible themes, some of which had a poetical sentiment that bordered on fantasy. Whilst Stanhope Forbes adhered rigidly to the central focus of Cornish life with all its attendant pleasures and hardships, he praised his wife's work and admired her 'charming and beautiful paintings which combine such lively imaginative qualities with almost unrivalled technical skill and artistic feeling.' Roling is a versatile artist and lecturer, described in 2005 as an artist who is 'the figurehead of contemporary figure painting in the Netherlands.' He studied at The Hague and in Amsterdam in the early 1960's and exhibited his oils in parallel with a lecturing post in Groningen. 'Liggend Naakt' dates from the same year as his first major mural at the Nijsinghhuis in Eelde.
