FALCONRY:- A rare varvel in the form of a small disc with a "floating" ring at the back, engraved with a "T" below a stylised coronet with chevrons either side, unascribed, probably late medieval period; 0.5" (1.3 cms) diameter; 2.7 grammes £300-500 (+ 26.4% BP*) *These small tags with the owner's information engraved thereon were attached to the jesses of a hawk/falcon so that the bird could be identified. This particular one has a gouge-like scratch on the front suggesting that it probably suffered damage from a metal tool, perhaps when it was excavated after having spent time in the ground, as is often the case.
