FOOTNOTE: Robert "Pen" Browning was an English painter. His career was moderately successful, but he is better known as the son and heir of the celebrated English poets, Robert Browning and Elisabeth Barrett Browning.
The phenomenon of mesmerism began in the late eighteenth century with the work of Austrian scientist Franz Anton Mesmer. Mesmer began developing his revolutionary theory in 1772 while studying at the University of Vienna.
Mesmerism swept through Victorian England beginning in 1837-38 as both a serious scientific and medical phenomenon and as a spiritual gateway to the mysteries of life, death, and the nature of the human soul. Prominent figures in science and literature saw in the flow of energies and mystifying trance a key to the health of the body and mind, while other equally prominent scientists and authors denounced mesmerism as a fraud and its practitioners as charlatans. For those who believed in the effects of mesmerism, many saw it as a remarkable discovery, but others saw a dark and dangerous power. Nowhere is the malevolent nature of mesmerism better expressed than in the poetry of Robert Browning, for whom mesmerism led to the loss of identity and self.

FOOTNOTE: The son and pupil of Alexander Cozens, J. R. Cozens made two protracted sketching tours on the Continent, from 1776-79 and again from 1782-83, when he accompanied Beckford. On both occasions he spent some time in Italy. The Lake of Nemi was one of his favourite subjects, and he executed a large number of drawings showing it from every view-point. The present watercolour shows the lake and town from halfway up the side of the crater, with the round tower of the Orsini conspicuous among the buildings. There are several versions of this drawing in existence, with dates ranging from 1778-91.

FOOTNOTE: Named after the Duke of Wellington, H.M.S. Wellesley was a 74 gun third rate and built by the East India Company. She was launched at Bombay on 24th February 1815. She carried Sir Charles Stuart de Rothesay to Brazil in 1823 and was the flagship of Rear Admiral Sir Frederick Maitland in the Mediterranean from 1827 to 1830 and later in Karachi. Admiral Maitland was replaced on his death by Commodore Sir James Bremer. The Wellesley saw active service under his command during the First Opium War in the early 1840's.
In 1854 the Wellesley was a guard ship then flagship at Chatham dockyard and was refitted by the London School Ship Society in 1868. In 1940 she was sunk by a German air-raid and was raised in 1948. Her figurehead now stands by the main gates of Chatham Dockyard.

FOOTNOTE: This watercolour is unusual among Helen Allingham's works in its freedom of handling and vibrant colour. The Allingham family spent the summer of 1878 in the picturesque village of Shere in Surrey, where they rented a cottage. During her stay in Shere the artist painted views of several cottages and farmhouses in the village, as well as the White Horse Inn and the surrounding countryside. She also worked in nearby Albury, Gomshall and Abinger Hammer.

The artist's strong Florentine influences are evident in his depiction of the traditional characters of the Commedia dell'Arte, including Scaramouche, Pierrot and Harlequine. the compositions feature dramatically costumes characters in the foreground set against whimsically rendered 'stage-sets', with distant landscapes in silhouette, expansive garden scenes and grand palaces.
