"Portrait of Triston Chambers son of Abraham Hemy Chambers and Mary Chambers, aged 2 years with angel wings holding a dove".
pencil.
19.5 x 15.5cm.
in original ebonised frame, inscribed in detail on the backboard:
The backboard is inscribed by Mary Radcliffe Chambers, who was the daughter of Abraham and Mary Chambers and sister of Triston Chambers, "Triston Chambers, son of Abraham Hemy Chambers & the beautiful Mary Chambers (Born Miss Radcliffe). This child died of Hooping cough at 2 years old in 14 Stratford Place. My virtuous & most exquisitely beautiful mother mourned 7 years for this child. When he was dying Richard Cosway the celebrated artist hastily came from his house 20 Stratford Place & drew this sketch - from which he afterwards did the picture in oil. Poor little Tripy as we called him was in the act of dying when this was done. He was the most amiable child I ever saw - Heaven took him away in time to escape all the sorrow we suffered. He rests in the vault in Paddington Church Yard. - Mary Radcliffe Chambers"

Click to view full image... AFTER JOHAN STALBOM (SWEDISH 1712-1777) "Portrait of Charles Emil Lewenhaupt the Younger (1721-1796), General Major 1772, head and shoulders wearing armour with a red undershirt, white frilled shirt and black cravat, his hair powdered and worn en queue".
oil on copper.
oval, 16.8cm high.
in original oval gilt wood frame surmounted with a ribbon crest, the backboard inscribed "Greve, Charl Emil Lewenhaupt, General Major, 1772".
FOOTNOTE: Charles Emil Lewenhaupt the Younger was the only son of Charles Emil Lewenhaupt (1691-1743), Major General in the Swedish army. In 1741 Lewenhaupt the Elder was involved in the decision to wage war against Imperial Russia. Following the war, on 20 June, 1743, Lewenhaupt the Elder was sentenced to death on the grounds of poor performance and conduct in the war. His son Charles Emil the Younger and a small party managed to free him, but he was re-arrested when aboard a vessel in the Stockholm archipelago bound for Danzig. He was executed on August 4th 1743 in Stockholm. His father's misfortune did not seem to have adversely affected his career and he devoted himself to Parliamentary politics and became Major General of the Swedish Cavalry.
The present portrait is a version of the miniature portrait by Johan Stalbom (1712-1777).
https://sok.riksarkivet.se/Sbl/Presentation.aspx?id=11277
From 1733 Stalbom studied in Stockholm with the painters Johan Pasch and Lorens Pasch the Elder. He was also a contemporary of Swedish portrait painters Carl Gustaf Pilo (1711-1793) and Lorens Pasch the Younger (1733-1805). It is possible that the present portrait and Stalbom's version were painted after a known portrait of Lewenhaupt by one of these notable Swedish portrait painters.
