Click to view full image... Outstanding WW2 Distinguished Flying Medal, Air Crew Europe Star (France and Germany bar) and QEII Royal Air Force LSGC to M Eng T.P. Burke (1802404) R.A.F. (1802404 Sgt T.P. Burke R.A.F. on DFM) very fine and better. Terence Percy Burke's DFM was announced in the London Gazette dated 19th September 1944, "On the night of 3rd/4th May 1944, Sgt Burke was the Flight Engineer of a heavy bomber, of which FSgt Lloyd was the captain, detailed to attack military barracks in enemy occupied territory. After the attack had been carried out and the captain had set course for base, the aircraft was hit by flak and set on fire by an attack from an enemy fighter which also put the port inner engine out of action. The aircraft went into a steep and uncontrollable dive, refusing to respond to its controls which had been severely damaged in the fighter attack. The pilot ordered the crew to bail out and the rear, mid-upper gunners and Bomb Aimer donned their parachutes and left the aircraft. Sgt Burke went to assist his pilot to put on his parachute and it was discovered that by their combined efforts it was possible to pull the aircraft out of its dive. Having succeeded in getting the aircraft back on to an even keel, the pilot cancelled his order to bail out. The engine which had failed could not be feathered and this added to the already great difficulty of keeping the aircraft in flying trim. With the able assistance of Sgt Burke and the skilful manner in which he nursed the three remaining engines, it is doubtful whether the pilot could have flown his aircraft safely back to England. This NCO has carried out 20 1/3 sorties against the enemy totalling 112 hours operational flying during which time he has shown a very high degree of skill, courage and initiative in the face of heavy flak and fighter opposition. For his cool and calculated work, I consider that Sgt Burke is worthy of the highest praise and that his gallant conduct merits the award of the DFM." The Station Commander endorsed the recommendation saying, "The whole-hearted support and excellent co-operation which Sgt Burke rendered to his captain during this perilous situation is beyond praise. Such prompt action under these most trying conditions was instrumental in saving the lives of the crew and much valuable equipment. I strongly support the recommendation of the Squadron Commander and consider Sgt Burke worthy of the award of the DFM." His log book entry for this date records his 13th Op flying Lancasters with 550 Sqn to Mailly-Le-Camp with the detail "Crash landed - Ford - 4 crew missing."
Sold with his 3 Log Books running from 27/12/43 to 28/10/65, RAF blue book Certificate of Service, 2 1965 letters of congratulations for him receiving a Commendation for his services at RAF North Front, Gibraltar, 6 photos of aircraft and crew, there are further photos glued inside the log books. He was born 4/9/23, enlisted 5/1/42, awarded wings 1/11/43, LSGC awarded 28/8/62, discharged 1/6/68. The log books record his first Op to Stuttgart 15/3/44, followed by ops to Frankfurt, Berlin, Essen, Nuremberg etc, by June they were flying ops mostly to French targets with attacks on Calais, Cherbourg, Fleres, Le Havre etc with his last op recorded as Kiel 23/7/44. He was then posted to 1656 Heavy Conversion Unit as an instructor where he remained until the end of 1945. Post war he served with 541 Sqn on Lancasters, converted to Lincolns 1950 and posted to 12 Sqn in 1951, 149 Sqn in 1952 and joined 206 Sqn on Shackletons in 1953. He remained with 206 Sqn until late 1957. He was involved with the Hydrogen Bomb tests at Christmas Island, the log book entry for 19/6/57 records a 9 hour flight "Christmas Island - Search I - Weapon Drop". 19th June was the date of the third test explosion 3/Purple Granite, a 200kt air drop bomb over Kiribati. His family state the aircraft flew through the mushroom cloud. His Certificate of Service also mentions he received an AOC Commendation in June 1957 which will almost certainly be for work in connection with the H Bomb tests. He then joined 202 Sqn flying Hastings until 1960. 1960-62 he was with 120 Sqn and his last flying unit was MOTU St Mawgan in 1965 where the last flight recorded was 20/10/65. Service book also states issued 1939-1945 Star, Defence Medal and BWM. Sold on behalf of the family. (See photo) (T)
