NEW CALEDONIA - NOUMEA - TYPE SAGE PERIOD MAIL, 1877-83 - FRANCE (FROM THE CHESTERFIELD ISLANDS) - RARE 25c BLACK ON RED SINGLE-FRANKING COVER; Fine 20 Aug. 1879 EL from a guano ship (long contents ref. bad weather, noting that the "Directeur de l;Ile Longue" is an adventurer without education, etc.!) at the remote "Ile Longue (group Chesterfield)" to Bordeaux, eventually posted in Noumea on 19 November with the rare Type Sage 25c Black on Red (Ceres/SG 43; only issued to Mayotte, Nossi-Be & New Caledonia) tied by a light Noumea cds with a very fine strike alongside; carried on the trans-Pacific route via NZ, Hawaii and the US. Rare place of origin (the uninhabited Chesterfield Islands had only been annexed to France in 1877) and rare franking. Exhibition Quality. £400

AN. V. SUEZ PAQ. F/1 MARS.1" d.s. nearby. Remarkably early stamped cover from this small PO [which opened in 1871 but for which no mark has been recorded until Dec. 1876].
