NEW CALEDONIA - PRESTAMP MAIL, 1854-1859 - VERY EARLY MISSIONARY LETTER FROM MARE (LOYALTY IS.) - PRIVATELY CARRIED 1500 MILES TO SAMOA; Fine 25 Oct. 1854 EL (folds neatly to show internal heading alongside address panel) from Missionary "J.P. Sunderland" to Rev. Nisbet at "Lalomalava" (Samoa) with interesting news of developments on the island in the very early stages of European contacts; "We are going to visit another part of Mare and also call at Lifu and then the ship returns to Mare and...goes on to Samoa...We have all got separate cottages...At Luarna (?) they have got up a new stone chapel...We shall have the pleasure of, opening it, I believe". One of the earliest known letters from New Caledonia; we have traced an earlier one in private hands. Exhibition Item. Cross Reference: SAMOA £500

Click to view full image... NEW CALEDONIA - PRESTAMP MAIL, 1854-1859 - EARLIEST KNOWN (?) COVER WITH POSTAL MARKS - PLYMOUTH SHIP LETTER VIA SYDNEY - REF. FRENCHMEN EATEN BY CANNIBALS, ETC.; Fine 26 June 1856 E from New Caledonia (presumably from Noumea) to Brest in France via Sydney & G.B. with boxed "GB/1F60c" and fine Sydney handstruck "3" on the front, charged "8"(decimes) with backstamps of Sydney (15? Nov.), "PLYMOUTH/SHIP LETTER" (blue cds; 28 Feb. 1857), London & Brest. The contents (sadly incomplete but clearly written from New Caledonia in French by a missionary, include (translated); "...Someone shouts 'Ship in sight'. Back soon.... It is indeed a vessel which comes to tell me that 7 Frenchmen have been eaten by the natives of a coastal tribe (Ouailou) and that a warship, La Bayonnaise, should be going(?) from Noumea to Balade [small village on the NE tip of the island at the opposite end from Noumea] to avenge this atrocity." Believed to be the earliest known cover from New Caledonia with postal markings, and with graphic historical contents regarding continuing cannibal activities. Click to view full image... NEW CALEDONIA - THE TRIQUERA ISSUE PERIOD, 1860-1862 - TRIQUERA 10c BLACK ON LOCAL COVER - ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED - WITH THE RARE PORT DE FRANCE C.D.S.; Fine 8 Dec. 1860 linen-lined env. (Sydney stationer's imprint beneath flap; signed by Calves) to Kanala with Triquera 10c Black Local Issue (full sheet margin at top, position 9; pre-usage tear in top margin just touching top frame-line) at top left (as usual at this date) with a very fine and very rare 2-ring Noumea "PORT DE FRANCE/8/DEC./1860/NOUV. CALEDONIE" cds below (not on the stamp itself - as always for this issue - with offset of the cds on the back flap). Addressed to "Monsieur Latour, Chef du Service de Sante, Kanala" (probably Walther de la Tour, recorded as a "medecin de la Marine d'etat" at the time). This 10c Local was only in use for letters sent between Noumea and Kanala in 1860 & 1861. Believed to be one of only two truly local usages of this stamp on cover; the slightly commoner - but still very rare - recorded usages of this Triquera 10c on cover are in combination with N.S.W. Diadem 6d's (known to Victoria, France & G.B.). [One of these Combination usages (the Triquera badly damaged though tied) realised £33,600 at auction in London in Dec. 2007.] The survival rate of local New Caledonia mail of the early 1860s is understandably minute. One of the rarest of all Pacific Islands covers. [With 1998 Roger Calves certificate of Genuineness, no.21458, stating that this is the only known correct local usage of this stamp on cover, but Tony recorded one other such cover, dated 12 Oct. 1860 mentioned (but not illustrated) in a 1959 Yvert auction. Also with letter, referred to in the Calves cert., written & signed in 1998 by Georges Kling agreeing with the cover's authenticity with eight explanatory points.] Highly Important Exhibition Centre-piece. £10,000

Click to view full image... NEW CALEDONIA - THE TRIQUERA ISSUE PERIOD, 1860-1862 - VERY RARE COVER WITH N.S.W. DIADEM 6d AND 1st-TYPE NOUMEA "PORT DE FRANCE" C.D.S.; 12 Aug. 1861 env. to Scotland "via Southampton" with NSW Diadem 6d (3 good to wide margins) tied by triple-oval Sydney "NSW" (matching the 19 Aug. Sydney backstamp) and an "EDINBURGH" transit cds (or LH half of a Duplex if the 1d Red for redirection has been removed from on top of the NSW 6d?), but also having a partly fine very rare 1st-Type Noumea "PORT DE FRANCE/NOU. CALEDONIE" cds alongside. Redirected on arrival in Scotland with several backstamps; very rare usage of NSW Issues in New Caledonia. There are signs that a stamp had at one time been applied at the bottom left as well, but it is unclear if this could have been a Triquera 10c Local or a 1d Red for redirection (there are also signs of offset ink in the space at bottom left, which might suggest that a Triquera 10c fell off in transit? [From the same correspondence as a NSW/Triquera Combination cover of July 1860 - copy included.] Very rare in either case. [Offered 'as is', priced accordingly, and not returnable.] Cross Reference: NEW SOUTH WALES £500

TO SAMOA; Small 4 Oct. 1861 EL (in Samoan; typed translation included) from "Hosea" at "Lifu" addressed to Rev. Nisbet in "SAMOA, Malua" with brief contents stating that the writer is "Pastor from Falealili" doing God's work there and that "I am sending you my son to go to school in Malua"; presumably the boy took this letter himself on the missionary ship between the two islands (a 1,500 miles voyage). Rare early letter from the Loyalty Islands. Cross Reference: SAMOA £300
