AN ALBUM OF TOBA-E PAINTINGS. Edo period, late 18th / early 19th Century. Comprising thirty-six caricature paintings including goblins, ghosts, and animals in human form, painted in ink, colour and gofun on brown paper, each sheet 20.5 x 31.5cm. £250-350 Toba-e (Toba-picture), comical and lightly satirical pictures, became popular in the Edo period, usually painted in simple brush work in ink and colours. Animals and humans are shown laughing and the limbs of the human figures are long and slender, and derive from the 12th Century handscroll painting Choju-jinbutsu-giga (Comic paintings of animals and people) attributed to Toba Soju.
