£12,000-15,000
Double gourd vases were popular during the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty and Wen (2012) notes that records tell of an Imperial commission of ten thousand blue and white double gourd vases in the twenty-sixth year of the Jiajing reign, 1547 (Enlightening Elegance, Art Museum, The Chinese University of Hong Kong). The gourd is a symbol of cosmic unity with popular sayings including yikun tiandi (δΈ€ε£Όε€©εœ°) describing the earth and heavens inside a gourd. The decoration adds further to the symbolism with the three friends of winter, pine, bamboo and prunus rubbing noses with auspicious animals painted to the body, and a shou character formed from a continuous branch in the upper section. A closely related example from the Huaihaitang collection is illustrated in Enlightening Elegance, 2012, cat no 64, and a further example in Jessica Harrison-Hall, Ming Ceramics in the British Museum, London, 2001, pl 9.
