Click to view full image... CHAPMAN HERBERT: (1878-1934) English Football Manager, famous for his association with Arsenal F.C. from 1925-34. Scarce T.L.S., Herbert Chapman, one page, 4to, Elland Road, Leeds, 18th January 1916, to J. B. Hamilton, on the printed stationery of Leeds City Association Football Club. Chapman writes, in full, ‘The enclosed (no longer present) has been addressed to me but unfortunately we disposed of all our spare kit months ago. I have acknowledged receipt and if you can assist them from your funds should feel greatly obliged’. A Leeds City Tramways purple ink received stamp appears above the text and with some pencil and ink annotations, one only very slightly affecting a few words of text but not the signature. Autographs of Chapman are scarce in any form as a result of his untimely death. A few small pinholes to the upper left corner and some light age wear, otherwise VG £300 - 400
Chapman managed Leeds City from 1912-18, resigning unexpectedly and without giving any reasons in December 1918. As football resumed in 1919-20, following the end of World War I, Leeds City were accused by a former player of financial irregularities involving illegal payments to guest players during wartime matches. Leeds City were subsequently expelled from the Football League in October 1919 and five club officials, including Chapman, were banned from football for life. The club was dissolved and the Elland Road ground was taken over by the newly formed Leeds United. Chapman appealed against the ban, which was overturned, and he later went on to unprecedented success with Arsenal.
