WW2 Military Medal, 1939-1945, Africa, Italy Stars and BWM to 1093361 Gnr J.M. Hume R.A. extremely fine and better. John Michael Hume's MM was announced in the London Gazette dated 24th August 1944. With copied citation, "Gnr Hume J.M. has done outstanding work as an O.P. Wireless Operator during the period September 1st 1943 - December 31st 1943. From December 4th - December 7th 1943 he was Wireless Operator to a Battery Commander supporting 2nd London Irish Rifles (38 Irish Bde, 78 Div) in their successful attack and occupation of the ridge overlooking the River MORO. At one period during consolidation the short telephone line between the O.P. and Wireless truck was cut three times by enemy shell and mortar fire which at the same time was very severe. Although it was not his own duty, at great personal risk, Gnr Hume volunteered to repair the line and thus maintained communications. On December 19th Gne Hume was again Wireless Operator to his Battery Commander during the attack made by R.C.R. (1 Cdn Div) on the cross-roads at 323142 (main ORSOGNA-ORTONA lateral road). No other wireless operators were available, and throughout the day and night Gnr Hume showed great courage and devotion to duty in keeping constant wireless watch although at times under considerable mortar, machine gun and shell fire and exposed to the fire of enemy snipers. By his own personal efforts Gnr Hume was undoubtedly of great assistance to the infantry he was supporting." Sold with the postal box of issue for the MM and the Buckingham Palace letter of transmission, also with the RA Records box of issue for campaign medals addressed to Mr J.M. Hume M.M., Burley in Wharfedale. (See photo) (R) £900
