Of Victorian theatrical interest - a rare Victorian silver heart-shaped box depicting a portrait of W. S. Penley in the title role of Charley's Aunt - engraved 'To Maud Freer, from Charley's Aunt December 21st 1895', hallmarked - London 1895, maker - Walker & Hall, Sheffield, 5.5cm. These boxes were given to ladies in the audience of the third anniversary performance at the Globe Theatre in London. However, this particular box was given to Maud Freer, who was the second wife of Lord William Cecil The 3rd Marquess of Exeter. She was either the niece or family friend of William Penley (1852 - 1912), the actor who created the role of Lord Fancourt Babberley and Charley's Aunt. The lot is sold with an inscribed photograph of Penley playing Charley's Aunt, signed in ink on reverse 'with Uncle Willies Love to Maud Oct 12th 1895', 16.5cm x 11cm and French's Acting Edition of The Importance of being Earnest Copyright 1893 (3) £100 - 150
