TWO RARE EARLY VICTORIAN ANTI-CORN LAW LEAGUE* WINE LABELS: one parcelgilt & untitled, the other pierced "PORT", both stamped out, with sheaves of wheat, a cornucopia of fruit, a scythe, a rake, a sickle, a bale of wool & the word "FREE" on each side, unmarked c.1840; 2.25" (5.8 cms) wide; 0.6 oz (2) £250-300 *Anti-Corn Law League: Agitation against the Corn Laws, which imposed duties on imported foodstuffs to protect British producers peaked c.1838 resulting in the creation of a Manchester Anti-Corn League, its function was solely as a propaganda organ, publishing attacks on the Corn Laws and sending out agents to preach free trade, and mobilize moral and even religious arguments against the Corn Laws, which allegedly increased the price of the 'poor man's bread', The league's doctrine quickly entered party politics and in 1846 The Corn Laws were abolished by Peel, the newly elected Prime Minister, who decided that all obstructions to the import of food must go, particularly in view of the recent Irish famine which threatened widespread starvation.
