Cuthbert Dawnay (1891-1964) of West Heslerton Hall, near Malton, North Yorkshire. She was educated at Queen Margaret's School, Yorkshire, and Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, from where she graduated in 1948 with a BA in French. An expert needlewoman, but without any formal training in art or modelling, she created these intriguing dioramas.Every item was handmade by her highlighting the patience and detail she incorporated into creating the wall reliefs, light fittings, accessories, carpets, wall hangings etc, each piece historically correct in every detail. The felt figures are worked around florists' wire and stuffed with sheep's wool, their faces were then embroidered and modelled with features, and theatrical hair was added. Each figure stood between 3" and 5" high approximately and could take at least 6 to 8 hours to make, including the costume. Each model is in its own fitted wooden case, with a glazed front and is fitted for electricity.Miss Dawnay first displayed her "miniature character and costume figures" in her London flat in December 1956 to raise funds for Hungarian refugees. In November 1957 an exhibition was held at the Royal Empire Society, opened by Joyce Grenfell, and fourteen months later a similar show took place in Leighton House, opened by Margaret Rutherford. The dolls were first shown in Yorkshire in 1959 at the Yorkshire Heritage Exhibition in York, and also at West Heslerton Hall in 1959, 1960 and 1962, all these events in aid of charity.More recently, the models have been exhibited in West Heslerton Church and viewed by intrigued visitors and tourists, raising thousands of pounds for Church funds. The residual collection will be sold throughout 2015, with all proceeds going to All Saints Church, West Heslerton

The trip culminated in Grenoble, where Frances and her travelling companion and best friend were to stay on to finish the year at the University. It was here she met Freddie, the nineteen year old son of a North Yorkshire doctor, who was hitchhiking around Europe after his first year at Cambridge. Freddie planned to spend just one night in Grenoble visiting friends he had met there the year before, but fate was to intervene and after meeting Frances he stayed a week. That week was to be the longest time they spent together until their wedding six years later. Each had gone back to their respective colleges, but continued to write despite the onset of war and both almost marrying other people. However, Frances wanted to see the dashing Englishman one last time before marrying, but mid-war the only way she could get to Europe was to join the OSS (a precursor to the CIA) and become a spy. Eventually she was posted to England, although once again fate would intervene and by the time she arrived Freddie had been sent to the Continent with the invasion. After several months Freddie was given three days leave, and they met in London. In those three days they met, got engaged, got un-engaged and re-engaged. Aside from another few days leave when they went back to Yorkshire to visit Freddie's parents they were not to see each other until their wedding day six months later. After the war Freddie joined the Foreign Office, and Frances worked for the BBC, and the pair spent their lives posted around the world including Copenhagen, Washington, Teheran, Hamburg, Johannesburg and Seoul. After Freddie retired, they returned to Teesdale together where they spent a very happy retirement.Freddie and Frances Leishman were married for sixty one years, they lived life to the full but remained solidly devoted to one another. Frances was renowned for having fabulous legs, and Freddie loved to see them on display! Wherever they lived he would seek out the best cobblers, and have them make extraordinary high heels to his own design to give to his wife.In this exhibition you can see some of these shoes, which reflect the incredible love story begun by teenagers in the South of France so many years before.
