An Exceptional 1832 Large Chinese Red Silk Embroidered 'Thank You' Wall Hanging, exquisitely embroidered in gilt and silk threads with figurative subjects and text, it has a cotton backing cloth and bears an exhibition label, 'Chinese Curtain lent by Dr Weir St Mungho's Malvern', 399cm by 188cmWe have been very fortunate to be given a detailed translation of the wall hanging;'Never to ForgetOur village has had flooding problems for years and the harvest has halved over the years. Mr Zhang Neihan suggested from year Renchen (1832) each four commune to be on guard, in turn to receive 500 liang for their own dispense. We should always thank Mr Zhang for being such a gentleman and his kind suggestion.'Then it lists 40 names of the beneficiaries from the Longjiang Village (translates as Dragon River), in the Guandong Province, South China. The embroidered figures are all symbolistic and wish longevity, prosperity, good fortune, happiness and immortality. Please see images for detailed translation.Provenance: the wall hanging belonged to the vendors great great grandfather Dr Archibald Weir (1828-1894), formerly of St Mungho's, Avenue Road, Great Malvern. The embroidery was displayed in the music room where it could be greatly admired. The family were led to believe that the curtain was possibly shipped from Shanghai by either, the Blue Funnel Line owned by his friend Alfred Holt, or his brother in law George Holt another shipping merchant, who resided at Sudley House (now part of the Liverpool Museum). £800 - 1200

Quaker Extract Sampler 'On Charity' Worked by Jane Oxley Dated 1819, worked in black cross stitch, in a gilt frame, 33cm by 28cmJane Oxley was born on the 24th January 1810 in Norwich, Norfolk to a prosperous Quaker family. Janes grand parents Joseph and Elizabeth Oxley, were travelling preachers and well known in Quaker circles. Unfortunately we are unable to find an entry for Jane at one of the Quaker Schools of the period. It is possible that, as her family were wealthy, she had a private tutor, who was Quaker, hence the style of this sampler. £400 - 600

A Quaker Medallion Sampler Dated 1780, worked on a loose weave linen incorporating four medallions in red cross stitch, resembling Ackworth motifs, dated and initialled 'AC 1780' 'HS 1780' 'ML 1782' 'SARA H SHC 1815' in different coloured threads, in a modern frame, 53cm by 22cmAll the sets of initials match up with the Ackworth School children registered from 1779. The two concentric heart shapes are similar to an early Quaker medallion sampler recently discovered in the Friends Historical Museum, Dublin. It shares similarities to one illustrated and discussed in C Humphrey's book Quaker School Girl Samplers from Ackworth, p72 Mary Allcard medallion sampler, using similar coarse fabric and hemming technique £2000 - 3000
