Corneulius Cayley's Late 18th Century Cream Silk Waistcoat embroidered with flowers and leaves in coloured silks, with straight hem to the front and straight pockets, bearing a paper label 'Lent by the Bishop of Gloucester', Arthur Cayley Headlam, for exhibition at The Bowes Museum in 1931Provenance: This waistcoat and the following lot were made for and worn by Cornelius Cayley on the occasion of his wedding to Sarah Ward in 1784 at St. Michael le Belfry, York.Cornelius Cayley was born in 1762 in St Petersburg and died in 1836 and is buried at Sowerby, Thirsk. He was the son of Sarah Cozens and John Cayley, British Consul General of St Petersburg.Sarah Cozens was sister to the painter Alexander Cozens and daughter of Richard Cozens who was a master shipbuilder brought to Russia from the Deptford Shipyards personally by Peter the Great to help expand the Russian Navy.The vendors are the Great Great Great Grandchildren of Cornelius Cayley and Sarah Ward. £400 - 600
