Richard Bathe was a wine merchant and he educated his children in Bath. Census records show that John Bathe was lodging at St Giles in London by 1871 where he described himself as an 'artist, paintings' but he had probably studied at the Manchester School of Art from the age of about sixteen. Bathe distinguished himself early with a Royal Academy medal and he exhibited a total of ten works (including two Thames scenes at the Royal Academy in 1872 and 1873) before dying tragically young of consumption in Eton in late 1874, aged just twenty five. ++ Mixed condition; some with tears and wear at edges £500-700 |

Provenance: Commander C. F. Allington; purchased by the current owner from The English Gallery, Cambridge on January 18th 1983 (as a view of Tintagel) Literature: London, Tate, 'John Martin: Apocalypse', Sept 2011-Jan 2012, illus. p.18 in catalogue. The work was submitted too late for the exhibition itself but was included in the catalogue with the comment that '[Martin's] compositions may tend towards the kinds of extended perspective effects of panoramas, but they are (literally) contained by gilt frames in a perfectly conventional fashion.' * Martin exhibited two views of Ilfracombe and the North Devon coast amongst five works shown by him at The Royal Academy in 1848. ++ Repaired top right corner; old tear/break lower right corner; lightly scored on rock on far left; some foxing; discoloration/fading £8000-12000 |

It was a nasty shot, but I could not wait, so let drive and he disappeared into some bushes. I then turned round and looked behind and saw him about a hundred yards away. I let drive both barrels ... He is not a very large one tho' he killed a full seized [sic] bullock. Hooper has taken a photograph of him with me on a rock above him. It ought to make a capital picture." The image was used as a Christmas card within the family. Poole served with the 12th Lancers in India and a tinted photograph (13.5 x 10cm) of him in uniform is included. The Gurney family home was Earlham Hall near Norwich. Pottergate is a nearby district on the west side of Norwich.
