ATTRIBUTED TO ARTHUR WELLINGTON FOWLES (1815-1883) A CAVALCADE OF YACHTS OFF COWES DURING THE REGATTA SEASON Illegibly faded label on stretcher, vessels' names inscribed in pencil on canvas edge, oil on canvas 40 x 76cm. * According to the inscriptions on the canvas edge (see illustrated details), the vessels include Belvidere, Columbine, Flirt, Esmerelda, Galatea, Gitana and Pearl. In correspondence with the owner in 2004, the Royal Yacht Squadron archivist suggested a date of 1843-1844 but no recorded RYS events included all those vessels. The assortment of vessels in this picture (which includes cutters, schooners, yawls and various other yachts) precludes this being a depiction of a race per se and so a 'parade' is the more likely event. More recent research suggests that 1845 is the probable date as Belvidere (the vessel on the right with no sails set) was an iron-hulled yacht built in 1844 but which did not appear at Cowes until 1845. The attribution to Fowles is tempting as so few marine painters were associated with compositions of this nature in waters around the Isle of Wight, but it would be an uncharacteristically early work for the artist whose career only blossomed in the 1850's. We are very grateful to Michael Naxton for his assistance with the cataloguing of this picture. ++ Some scattered retouching over old minor damages; a little thin in a few places £1000-1500 |
