*The sitter was an Anglo-Irish officer in the British Army. He served with great distinction in various arenas of war as far afield as Burma, the Crimea, China, Canada and Africa. He served as Commander-in-Chief of the Forces from 1895 to 1900 and his reputation for meticulous and logistical efficiency prompted the expression "everything's all Sir Garnet", meaning "all is in order." There is an equestrian statue of Wolseley in Horse Guards Parade in London, sculpted by Sir William Goscombe John R.A. and erected in 1920. W. S. Gilbert (of Gilbert & Sullivan) deliberately based the character of Major-General Stanley in the operetta The Pirates of Penzance on Wolseley as he was 'the very model of a modern Major-General'. £200-300 1680-1682. OTTO VAN VEEN (1556-1629) VIRGIN AND CHILD Oil on oak panel 40 x 29cm.
* Derived from Raphael's 'Madonna del Velo' (also sometimes known as 'Madonna of Loreto' and 'Madonna del Popolo'), c.1508-1509, in the Musee Conde, Chantilly. Raphael's version of the subject includes Joseph on the right and measures 120 x 90cm. The playful but touchingly intimate subject includes the finely painted veil which connotes the swaddling of Christ at the Nativity and also the shroud upon His entombment. During Van Veen's lifetime, Raphael's painting was in the Church of S. Maria del Popolo and subsequently in the Borghese Collection in Rome but its precise provenance is a little obscure. Numerous 16th- and 17th-Century copies are recorded. This Netherlandish copy might have been based upon Michaeli Grecchi Lucchese's engraving of 1553 but Van Veen was studying under Federico Zuccaro in Rome in the mid-late 1570's. £7000-9000
