1847 UNUSUAL PRE-STAMP ENTIRE REDIRECTED TO GERMAN STATES; 30 Oct. 1847 E "per Ganges" Sydney to London. Rated "3"d ship letter rate and "1/-" inwards packet letter, deleted and re-rated '8'(d). Redirected to Bonn, Prussia and rated a total of "12"sgr due. Two soiled file folds however a very scarce (only four believed to exist) example of New South Wales mail redirected to the German States. PHOTO - see page 12. £120

1833-1847 STAMPLESS MAIL TO GREAT BRITAIN INC. L. EARLY REF. TO MINING; Group inc. 1833 Printed EL (prospectus of the Australian Mine Exploring Co. - seeking subscriptions to allow Dr Lhotsky to research the west of Twofold Bay and the Australian Alps for precious metals. Dr Lhotsky wrote "A Journey from Sydney to the Australian Alps" in 1834), 1833 EL to London Missionary Society concerning goods damaged in transit "...The Society's Books and Publication were much injured by Salt Water..." and 1837 part EL being an account for the import of toilet supplies inc."4 doz. bears grease" and "2 doz. very large whiskers with beard attached...." 1854-59 STAMPED SHIP LETTERS TO GREAT BRITAIN; Group mainly representing the 6d ship letter rate (with effect from 30.9.1854) the majority with 6d imperf Diadem frankings, one with vertical strip of four of the 2d Diadem, apparently overpaid and two further examples each franked with 1/- imperf Diadem for the double rate. 1858 REMARKABLE DOUBLE DISASTER COVER TO ENGLAND; 1 Oct. 1858 env. with 6d Diadem (variable margins) tied by Sydney concentric values. Backstamped Sydney and Leicester c.d.s. carried on the "Victoria" which began leaking near Ceylon; the passengers and mail transferred to the "Oneida" at Galle who broke her screw approaching Aden. The mails then transferred to the "Bengal" which arrived uninterrupted at Suez. Dramatic transmission with two ships disabled en route. PHOTO - see page 12. £250

SYDNEY TO FRANCE COVER POSTED ROM LONDON WITH 8 G.B. 1d REDS;L Remarkable and fine 5 July 1858 EL from "Sydney" (Augustus Dreuther & Co. - the Hanseatic Consul at the time) to Cognac most unusually sent by private means to London and posted from there (13 Sept. c.d.s. on reverse) franked by 8 G.B. 1d Red 'Stars' all tied by neat fine London Chief Office "19" Diamond Numerals; there is a Calais transit c.d.s. on the front with London's red "PD" in oval, and Paris, T.P.O. & Cognac c.d.s.'s on the reverse. 1855 DIE PROOF OF THE DIADEM ISSUE BACKGROUND:A die proof in black on thin unwatermarked paper (85 x 61 mm) taken during the build up of the background of the Diadem issue, clearly shows the side panel of this geometric lathe work pattern. The proof has m/s "Fd" & "215". Tiny thin but a rare proof. The side panel was also used for the Tasmania 1858 1/-. Illustrated on page 100 of the recently published G W Granzow book on P.B.
