WAR OF THE GRAND ALLIANCE - RARE CAMPAIGN LETTER; 23 July 1695 EL (small part of contents with signature torn away; reinforced folds) ex "Bruges" to London charged "8" with large part (Foreign Branch) Bishop mark on the top flap, with fascinating contents concerning the fall of Dixmeud: ''The soldiers when they found themselves betrayed and they were ordered to lay down their arms cry'd shame on those that commanded them and broke their arms. The Queen's Regiment of Dragoons cry'd and tore the hair from their heads, desirous of the Governor only to open one of the Ports and though there was but little probability of any of them escaping through the whole French ARmy, yet they would much rather dye than submit themselves Prisoners at the discretion of the French General...'' "GEORGE R." [KING GEORGE I] SIGNED WARRANT AUTHORISING THE START OF THE WAR OF THE QUADRUPLE ALLIANCE; Original 7 Aug. 1718 foolscap manuscript document (professionally closed tears affect text but well clear of signatures) boldly signed by the King "George R" at the top beside a very fine embossed Royal wafer seal with pink ribbons and countersigned by J[ames]. Craggs [the Younger, 1686-1712, son of his namesake the PMG at the time]. This important historical document gave the King's personal authority for the finalising the "Treaty with the Emperor & French King" (filing note on reverse). This Treaty of the Quadruple Alliance gave the authority for the war between the 4 allies (GB, France, Germany & Austria) to prevent Spain's continuing expansion. A rare Royal autograph and a rare example of a document that started a major war. PHOTO - see above. £400

NELSON's CABIN BOY's EYE-WITNESS ACCOUNT OF THE BLOCKADE NEAR TOULON; Sept. 1793 EL from William Hoste on H.M.S. Agamemnon to Norfolk charged "1/-" (Packet Rate) and then "1/5" with a fine London Foreign Branch "OC/7" transit mark across the join on the reverse; the contents mention "Captain Nelson" (a distant relation of the 13-year-old writer) twice and describe the ship's recent action against a French fort "Cavalarre about 12 leagues to the East of Toulon" in which the ship was fired upon and responded killing at least one Frenchman; "In the morning Captain Nelson intended to send in our boats to burn them but they thought proper to save us the trouble by coming out of the harbour with 5 or 6 small vessels in consequence of a message Capt. THE GREEK WAR OF INDEPENDENCE - CAMPAIGN LETTER DURING BUILD-UP TO BATTLE OF NAVARINO; Fine 29 Sept. 1827 EL from "H.M.S. Dartmouth off Navarino" to G.B. (carried by "the Seingapatam") charged "1/-" with a partly fine red boxed step-type "PORTSMOUTH/SHIP LETTER" on the front; the contents give a good insight into how Codrington's chaotic command was leading to an inevitable show-down (the famous Battle finally took place on 20 Oct. 1827); "...we found...the English & French Admirals were at anchor in Navarine [Bay] treating with Ibrahim Pacha about the Greeks. He has got a Fleet in there amounting to 102 sail...he says we shall never take him alive...We furl our sail all day and lay about 3 miles off Navarine to prevent the escape of the Turks...I have no doubt we shall [give] the Turks a good drubbing if they attempt to stir...". 1857 WRECK COVER CARRIED ON THE "EMEU" WHICH RAN AGROUND; 10 Sep. 1857 env. (file fold at top) to England with 6d Diadem (defective at top left) tied by Sydney dumb cancel with Sydney and Beverley c.d.s on reverse. The "Emeu" struck a reef in the Red Sea opposite Jeddah on 22 Oct. 1857. The mails picked up by the "Madras" on 18 Nov. 1857 and then transferred to the "Ripon" which arrived at Southampton on 6 Dec. 1857. Good example of this famous incident. £150

1834 ENTIRE LETTER TO A HIGH PROFILE COLONIALIST; 19 May 1834 very extensive EL (few tears and repairs) "p Persian" Sydney to London (redirected within London) rated "6"d for a double ship letter and "1/8"(d) upon arrival. The rear with framed "INDIA LETTER/DEAL" and London c.d.s. Addressed to Captain D'Arcy Wentworth (junior, 1793-1861), the first Australian born to be commissioned as an officer in the British Army and a member of the first Legislative Council in New South Wales. The contents from his property agent in the colony concerning 3150 acres of land let at an annual rental of £284/5/-. Typed transcript included. PHOTO - see page 11. £200

1837 ENTIRE LETTER WITH TWO RARE SHIP MARKINGS; 12 Oct. 1837 EL (central file fold) Sydney to London rated "6"(d) double ship letter and "1/10"(d) upon arrival. The face with the very rare "POST PAID SHIP LTR/SYDNEY/OC * 12/1837" (PHNSW SL1 - re-cut version only known used 12-14 Oct.) and rare "EXEMPT SHIP Lr" (smudged), apparently applied in error and deleted. The rear with framed "INDIA LETTER/GRAVESEND" and London c.d.s. Contents regard an account to the London Missionary Society. PHOTO - see page 6. £300

1837 ENTIRE LETTER BY A HIGH PROFILE COLONIALIST; Fine 8 Dec. 1837 EL "p Luisa" Sydney to England rated '3'(d) ship letter and "2/2"(d) deleted and "2/4"(d) due. Rear with framed "INDIA LETTER/PLYMOUTH" and London c.d.s. Fascinating contents by Henry Burton Bradley (1815-1894) Solicitor and famed health reformer when he was Second Clerk of the Supreme Court of New South Wales; making reference to the resignation of Sir Richard Bourke, Governor of New South Wales and the plight of "the judge"(probably Sir Roger Therry 1800-74) who lost his bid to become Chairman of the Quarter Sessions and the repayment of a loan and his board at "the Judges". 1842 ENTIRE LETTER MAKING REFERENCE TO MORETON BAY, BANKRUPTCY, CORRUPTION ETC; 22 Feb. 1842 EL "pr Harrington" (few peripheral tears) Sydney to England, rated "3"(d) ship letter and "8"(d) inwards ship letter charge. The rear with unframed "SHIP LETTER" and two arrival c.d.s of "9 JY 1842". Contents refer to the failure of the Registrar of Supreme Court for £50000 plus the properties of Intestates entrusted to him (see following lot) and "The new Settlement of Moreton Bay....was formerly used as a penal settlement for doubly convicted felons but has recently been cleared of those gentleman....there doubtless will be a separate Government organised for it....." 1842 ENTIRE LETTER FROM A FORMER CONVICT ANNOUNCING HIS ABSOLUTE PARDON BY THE GOVERNOR; 21 May 1842 EL (few small repairs) Sydney to London rated "3"(d) ship letter rate and "8"(d) due on arrival. Backstamped "SHIP LETTER" and two arrival c.d.s of "SP 12 1842". Contents written by George Smith which mentions his conviction of forgery in London in June 1831 and transportation on the "Lady Harewood" in March 1832 and his recent Absolute Pardon from Sir George Gipps, Governor of New South Wales. The writer also mentions his employment is at risk following the suspension of the Registrar of the Supreme Court (due to bankruptcy and embezzlement). Significant social history. 1844 WRECK COVER DISCOVERED IN 2012 AND PREVIOUSLY UNRECORDED; 8 Nov. 1844 OHMS (scarce thus) EL (file folds and stains) "Per Thos. Lowry" Sydney to London (c.d.s on reverse), sent without colonial postage and rated "1/4"(d) double inwards charge. Routed via St Helena, the ship struck a sunken rock(s) upon arrival in Dartmouth when in charge of the pilot. Whilst the mails were recovered with little delay, the pilot committed suicide the next day. Previously thought that no example existed, now recorded by Peace (2012) at page? Possibly the only example extent. PHOTO - see page 12. £500

1846 MISSIONARY LETTER WRITTEN AT LEONE (SAMOA) AND POSTED IN SYDNEY; 23 Feb. 1847 E (peripheral stains) written at Leone (Southern side of Tutuilla, Samoan Islands) and posted at Sydney (PHNSW Type SL3, var. 1 - early use) to London. Rated "3"(d) ship letter rate and "8"(d) private ship letter rate due. The rear with "SHIP-LETTER "and London c.d.s. Contents concerning an account written by Thomas Bullen, Christian Missionary, who died in Samoa in 1848 and was buried on the same plot as his infant son who died there earlier.
