Property of a Gentleman: A fine Kangxi period 'cafe au lait' ground bowl, with everted rim, the waisted body raised on a foot rim, decorated with a pine tree, flowering prunus and Heavenly Bamboo, emerging from rock work, being a version of "The Three Friends of Winter", with carved hardwood stand and in fitted silk box, unmarked, 7in. (18cms) wide. NB: Heavenly Bamboo, "Tianzhu" in Chinese, is often substituted for bamboo in this context and is associated with longevity, particularly birthdays. PROVENANCE: Collection of a titled British diplomat serving in Singapore and Hong Kong from 1864-1893, thence by descent, sold by direction of his family.
