FROM "PHOENIX"
all signed, inscribed with title, dated 1980 and numbered 4, 94, 184, 274, 364 and 454 respectively from a total edition of 540
colour screenprint collages, printed by Medara Screenprinting and published by Editions Alecto for the Contemporary Art Society in an edition of 90 sets of six
56 x 71.3cms; 22 x 28 1/4in., in fully enclosing borderless plexiglass frames. (a suite of six)
NB: Each of the 540 "Phoenix" prints is unique but they were arranged together in sets of six. The basic image has a rectangle about 1/7th of the size of the main sheet, collaged on. During the printing process there was a sequence of nine regulated shifts of angle through which the collage rectangle was moved. These sequences were determined by the movement of the rectangle around the edge of the image area starting from the left corner. From a position against the edge it tilts on one fixed corner until another corner or side touches the edge again; then it is tilted away from a new fixed corner, producing a regulated tumbling around the inside edge of the image area. The concluded sequence, through nine fixed points, ends with the rectangle back in the starting position. The prints were numbered from 1 to 540 from start to finish of the sequence and the sets of six were made up by taking one from each run of ninety figures, i.e. the first set had the numbers 1, 91, 181, 271, 361 and 451 and the last set numbers 90, 180, 270, 360, 450 and 540.

Dr. William Crotch
(1775-1847)
AN ALBUM OF DRAWINGS AND WATERCOLOURS, MOSTLY DEPICTING CLARE HALL, ST. ALBANS, HERTFORDSHIRE, HOME OF CATHARINE SHARP, PUPIL OF DR. CROTCH AND ORIGINAL OWNER OF THIS ALBUM: THE COLLECTION COMPRISING FIFTY SIX PENCIL OR GRISAILLE LANDSCAPE STUDIES AND NINE WATERCOLOURS
inscribed and dated variously between September 20th, 1806 and October 12th, 1910; also included but unmounted in the album, is an engraved portrait of William Crotch aged 3 years, by J. Sanders of Norwich, published 1778; a 19th Century albumen-type photograph of Clare Hall; a small quantity of other drawings, perhaps by Catharine Sharp; and sundry other intaglio prints:
All in half morocco binding with marbled boards and manuscript contents-page.
59.5 x 47cms; 23 1/4 x 18 1/2in.
NB: Dr. Crotch was a composer, instrumentalist, landscape painter and draughtsman - an infant prodigy (as celebrated in the Sanders engraving), who achieved Mastery of the Piano at the age of only 2 1/2. Capriciously he would on occasion refuse to perform in front of an audience and at one performance preferred to make chalk drawings of ships, soldiers and other subjects on the floor. By the age of 22 he was a professor of music at Oxford. He was associated with the circle of the Oxford drawing Master John Malchair (1729-1812) and in 1803, succeeded William Delamotte as drawing master to the Oxford Undergraduates, teaching there until his move to London with his wife and family in December 1805. Examples of Crotch's watercolour landscapes are kept at Norfolk Records Office, Brighton Art Gallery, The Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, the Tate Gallery, the Victoria & Albert Museum and the British Museum.
See illustration £2000-3000
