Sporting Memorabilia

505
A West Auckland FC, Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy, 1909 winner's medal; the obverse with footballing scene in relief bearing the artist's initials "S.J.", the reverse struck with a World Globe enclosed by a laurel wreath and inscribed "II TORNEO INTERNAZIONALE DI FOOT-BALL, INDETTO DALLA STAMPA SPORTIVA, TORINO, APRILE 1909", both sides showing vestigal traces of the original gilding; the now-detached ribbon-ring enclosing a white-metal split-ring and original artificial-silk ribbon in the Italian National Colours.
In 1909 millionaire businessman Sir Thomas Lipton organised what is now often referred to as "The First World Cup". The Thomas Lipton Trophy was held in Turin and brought together leading club Teams representing Italy, Switzerland and Germany. However, despite Sir Thomas's ambitions, the Football Association decided not to send a team to represent Great Britain. For reasons that are historically not clear, Lipton chose a team of amateurs from the Northern League mining village of West Auckland, County Durham, to compete against the prestigious professional clubs Juventus, F.C. Winterhour and Stuttgart.
Surprisingly, West Auckland won the competition by beating Stuttgart 2-0 then F.C. Winterhour 2-0 in the final on the 12th April.
Perhaps even more amazingly, in 1911 West Auckland travelled again to Italy and defended their World Title beating Juventus 6-1 in the final to become outright holders of the Trophy which was never contested again.
Today, a solid silver re-creation of the Thomas Lipton Trophy is displayed in West Auckland Working Men's Club from where, tragically, the original silver-plated Trophy was stolen in 1994.
West Auckland FC possess one example of the Winners Medal which has an identical ribbon and split-ring to those included with the example here for sale.
A TV dramatisation of the story starring Dennis Waterman "The World Cup: A Captain's Tale", was produced by Tyne Tees Television in 1982.
We are indebted to West Auckland FC, West Auckland Working Men's Club and Peter Holme of the National Football Museum for their assistance in the research and authentication of this lot.

The 1955 F.A. Cup Winner's medal awarded to "Bobby" Robert George Cowell, who played right back in the historic Jackie Milburn-captained Newcastle United Team which won the F.A. Cup by defeating Manchester City 3-1 following took previous F.A. Cup victories in 1951 and 1952. Other than Milburn and Bobby Mitchell, Cowell was the only player to collect all three medals.
He was born in 1922 at Trimdon Grange, County Durham. After playing for Blackhall Colliery he joined Newcastle United in October 1943. He was one of the first attacking-backs of his era and made a speciality of the off-the-line clearance. He was a member of the Team that in 1947 put United back into the First Division after a thirteen year absence. After his successes in the triple-F.A. Cup-winning squad he was on the verge of international recognition only to have his career prematurely ended by a knee injury sustained during the 1955 summer tour of Germany. He was given a Testimonial match upon his retirement (see Lot 508) in celebration of his 330 appearances for United (including 288 league games). He died on 11th January 1996 in Newcastle upon Tyne aged 73.
